My EDC knife for the next 5 months --Ongoing Review--

Many months back I'm sure some of you remember that I ran a poll and asked what you thought I should carry for about 6 months as an EDC knife. Many thought that I should carry my UK Pen Knife for 6 months. Some things changed, my life got busy, and I sorta just got caught up in other knives, things, etc. I was carrying my orange UKPK today and I thought....."I'm gonna do this".

To make a VERY long story short, I was a dum dum and got a ticket a couple weeks ago. So even though I can thankfully pay the ticket and court costs (it was a LOT) it was just really stupid of me. So, I decided that I would limit myself to the knives I have and also not purchase any new knives (or trade or anything) until around Christmas time. I did sell off a handful of knives to pay the ticket because I don't think it should have come out of my family money because I was a dum dum. :)

So regardless I have decided to carry only my orange UK Pen Knife until at least Christmas. Making it my true "every day carry". I chose the orange one because I think it looks least like a weapon. If I were going to carry a knife as a weapon I wouldn't carry a bright one to call attention to it. I also love the blade of the UKPK and the fact that it has more of a finger choil than the Caly 3. Also, with the deep pocket wire clip it is not screaming "look right here at my pocket". I normally don't care about this but I will be carrying this not only at home and outside of work, but also in the office that I work in (Hospital). I cannot carry my Paramilitary at work without people freaking out, and I don't want to have to deal with people going to my boss and making a huge deal out of my knife. Orange screams tool!

So I will continually post to this thread with pictures, and thoughts about the knife. It will not be babied and I'm hoping to have it nicely worn in by Christmas with some good war scars and character.

On a side note, I am starting to think that I may end up starting to just collect "Slip-Its" only. :)

And yes, this is the same knife that I modified the backspacer/spring on so that it would bury the tip of the blade a bit deeper into the handle when closed.

I am considering filing down the G10 on the right handed side of the knife at a slight angle to allow better access to the thumb hole. We'll see.

Here are some pics....

Those are some nice high res. pics! I EDC the caly 3 and love it. Looking forward to reading more about your EDC

So today I decided that I wanted to file down some of the G10 handle so it would allow better right handed thumb access to the Spyderhole.

Here are a few shots. It works MUCH better like this. You can see the difference between the left and right side. The left side is factory. The right side is not. :)

Here's one clipped to my jeans just for fun....

And yes I made sure to cover my face with an N95 mask I had so I wouldn't breathe in the G10 dust / fibers /etc.

How solid does it open? I only own one other slip-joint style knife and its never shut on my fingers but I also haven't put it through much hard use. I know the choil is there to prevent slamming down on your fingers, but do you ever worry anyway?

Good luck.

I like the UKPK and my only negative is that the blade point should be more on the opening side of the pivot when the blade is open. As is, the blade is biased to close when performing stabbing moves, like when starting a cut in a large cardboard box.

Yeah great pictures! What camera did you use? Also, first time I've seen horseshoe nails used as part of the backdrop, ha ha!

I don't worry. I don't use it in a way that would make it close on me. It has much more spring pressure than a regular slippie (like a Case stockman).

Good luck.

I don't understand this. I simply make the entry into the cardboard at a slight angle. It's pretty easy. I think people need to use knives more slowly and carefully instead of "performing stabbing moves". :)

Look at many of the common cutting one does that involves starting at a specific point or when starting a cut in a tougher material and you'll see 'stabbing moves'.

I truely failed to see the import of these moves, and testing for same, until I started dealing with 'failed' locks, usually liner-locks.

It takes little effort to design a blade to provide an opening bias in 'stabbing moves', many tradtional slipjoints have the feature as well as newer locking knives.

I'm actually really excited about this EDC experiment! I check this thread everyday to see if there are any new updates - I have no life. Cool mod to the UKPK though!!

Incredible. I see a lot of mods on these forums. That one is subtle and should be part of the original design. VERY well done.

The observation of the day.....

I've noticed that no matter what I do this thing has such a low riding clip that about 50% of the time it's difficult to remove from my pants.

I've gotten to the point where I'm somewhat used to it but remember this is going from a Paramilitary. The Para has so much sticking out that you don't even have to put forth any effort and you can grab it and pull it out.

What seems to work best for me is to put my thumb into my right pocket and rest it on the G10 scale, and then I put my index finger at the bottom of the clip on the outside of my pants pocket sort of lifting up. If I don't do that and I actually put my fingers on the clip (like pressing inward) it just wants to smash the pocket tighter and the knife doesn't want to come out.

It's very secure like this but like always, security comes with a price. Secure locks are sometimes hard to close (on a knife). Secure cars don't always look pretty.....neither do secure shelters. The price for the secure pocket clip is difficulty removing it from your pocket (for me) but what you get is a knife that is hard to lose and hard to see.

The good outweighs the bad here.

I made a YouTube video of it and will post that in here in a couple hours...
