Flying to another state, here in the USA, but I have to drive a ways when I get to that state and I have to have a knife on me or a multi-tool (protection j.i.c). So can I put lets say my DPX Hest, (smallest I have) in a ziplock bag and put it in my suitcase I will be checking in? NOT CARRY ON. I read several answers and some say dont, some say yes. Do I have to declare it or? Anyone ever done this? Help? Thanks.

Yes, you can do that. But may I recommend putting the cheaper knife in there? Knives have been known to have been stolen during transit. Or maybe get one of the TSA locks for your luggage.

Yes youre right! ill just throw an old benchmade in there. That should do! Thanks!:)

You can put a knife in your checked baggage. Heck, you can put a gun in your checked baggage (but you have to have it in a locked case, and declare it, etc).

But yeah, don't pack something you'd greatly lament losing in case a TSA inspector has some sticky fingers.

this doesn't mean that the bag will not be open, as far as i can remember, no luggage should be lock permanently when traveling in or out of the USA, i am sure that other staff than TSA know / can open the TSA locks..talking to some TSA guys they are more likely to randomly check out a "locked" luggage than not

on the knife side, well as the others have said, or DHL / FEDEX / USPS it to the state you are going to.. this works pretty well too

I usually roll with way too many knives in my luggage. Honestly, last time I flew, I thought. "I'm only gonna take a cheap knife or two".

I kept packing, and when I arrived, I pulled them out to check. I realized i had over $900 in knives in my bag. None really high end, no customs or any thing. I have flown with customs and Busse, but am not planning on doing that any more.

I have to fly next wee, and wanted a custom. So I sent it ahead (the wife and kids drove down), so I will have it on the vacation. I will still pack a few traditional folders. Maybe a less expensive fixed blade.

I typically pack them up in socks, and stuff them in shoes. Never lost one yet, but when I do, I will be super pissed!

if you put it in your checked luggage put a lanyard on it and a lock and lock it to the inside of your suitcase. use a lock that's a little better then those cheap suitcase locks you get at the dollar store, something that isn't picked as easy maybe a combination lock students use for lockers. if they open your bag they cant take it easily and id they do take it you can prove they worked to steal it. even snap a phone pic of it in there while at the airport for proof

There's always the dirty underwear trick...

I put a gun lock through the Spyderco hole of my knives and lock it around the metal frame of on the inside of the suitcase. I've done this 4 or 5 times and had no issues.

For those that don't know what a gun lock is it's just basically a cable type of lock that you can put through the barrel of your gun and comes out the slide or magazine well and locks to the other end. You could do the same with a bike lock but they are longer usually.

I fly a lot and have come up with a travelling EDC with knives and tools that get the job done, but aren't expensive (SAKs, Leathermans like the ST300, basic Spydercos and Cold Steel). I've had a few stolen from my bags so I've learnt my lesson.

When the folder I choose has an opening hole, I put a lock through it and secure the knife to some part of the suitcase. It's not thief-proof, but it's better than nothing. You can also go with a knife that's easy to take apart, send the blade in your luggage and keep the handle on your person (make sure that the handle is non-threatening, something with a sharp glass breaker pommel might not be allowed on board).

I travel often, mostly international. I have yet to have a knife go missing from my luggage.

I just got back from Alaska. On the way there I intended to check in my bag. I didn't want to have an expensive knife come up stolen, so I put an Opinel #8 in my shaving kit. On the drive to the airport I forgot about the knife. And wanting to catch an earlier flight in Seattle to avoid a lengthy layover, I carried on my bag. I didn't even remember the Opinel until I got to Fairbanks, and there it was right where I packed it. I couldn't believe it made it through security. I ended up giving the knife to my brother because I just knew it wouldn't make it back home. Now I need another #8, but my brother has a good slicer.

yeah, easy thing about spyderco is being able to lock the blade to the frame. if your knife has no opening hole but open back construction you might be able to lock through that way.

not theft proof, but the baggage handlers want quick grabs. if they have to really dismantle something they probably will leave it alone.

I've done it before myself (normally with something cheep like my user Spyderco Tenacious). If I buy a knife while out someplace like that, I just find the local post office and ship it to myself.

It's happened to me a few times, and it used to be an endemic problem at some airports (in one town it was so widespread and organized that the local news channel did a one hour special on the thieves). It's uncommon, though. I can remember three knives/multitools that were stolen from my bags in 20 years of frequent flying.

Holy moly that's genius! Def gonna use this next time I have to fly anywhere!

Before I used to always just include a picture of the knives + a list of the knives I was carrying at the very top of the bag they were packed in. This way they know that should anything disappear for any reason, I would know immediately upon unpacking, as well as have decent proof of what was packed and what was missing.

Great idea! If I can only find my Glocklock!

Never had an edc stolen from a bag when checked, though I am paranoid about it so I try not to fly with something expensive. Especially internationally. Random checks can get things confiscated for no good reason. I'll usually just throw a SAK in there for those cases. Domestically, gotta be careful of knife laws. Spyderco Delica usually fills that role.
I typically put it inside a shoe, with a pair of socks stuffed in there to keep it from coming out.

My brother in law had his BM Rift stolen from checked baggage in Europe.

Put a gun in also. Checked luggage with guns have an extra eye kept on them and you're less likely to have your bags stolen/lost in transit that way. Even something like a starter pistol is fine for that use. So in general that will keep your luggage from getting messed with.
