Here's my latest ELMAX mule shod in Cocobolo. I've admired this wood for a long time, but never picked it up to work with. It is very dense, very hard, and very oily. It is also very forgiving and responds beautifully to shaping/sanding/polishing - although it took a long time to shape it due to its hardness. Also, I couldn't use the belt sander because it created enough heat to start burning the oil in the wood. Smells like burnt popcorn, actually...

I counterdrilled the holes and attached the scales using 0.187"x0.500" pivot bolts, without glue. I wanted to be able to remove them in the future. This particular knife isn't going to be a user right away.

Thanks again, Sal, for keeping the Mule project up and running!

I like the swells you added, very clean looking.
Cocobolo is one of my favorite all around handle materials, it looks awesome. The only thing you need now is a good leather sheath. :foot:

This knife looks terrible, probably you want to get rid of it....
Just let me know :D:D:)
Great job. You made me really jelous today.

Very nice work, how is the edge holding on the Elmax?
I think it might be my first MULE, because it is at an excellent price point.

How did you finish it? Fine sanding and oil, wax, left as is, etc?

I just sanded it down to 1200 grit and left it as-is. This cocobolo is full of resin and has almost a "waxy" feel to it. No need to put any coating on it.

Thanks for all the nice comments, folks. This is probably my 12th Mule - but I'm only doing them for personal use and for family gifts.
