My Evaluation of the Wave

Over the last eight months or so, I've owned the following waved Emersons:

2000 Commander SFS [sold]
2000 Commander BTS
Green-T SOCFK tantos #048, 051 [both sold]
Black-T SOCFK spearpoint #054 [sold]
2000 CQC7BW SFS

and I have come to the conclusion that the 7B is the best unit for me. It waves open the easiest not only in terms of speed and ease of draw, but in terms of reliability and consistency; it leaves my pocket open EVERY time. The SOCFK is a very nice knife with a great handle, but I find it's the finger guard on the handle that impedes the wave when opening. It seems to push the pocket material away from the wave making it more difficult to reliably wave open the knife.

The Commander opens easier than the SOCFK due to the greater distance between the scales and the wave, but on the specimens I've had, I could never loosen the pivot screw to the point I can on my 7B without the blade getting sloppy and rubbing the liner. This added tightness translates into more required force and less repeatability for a wave opening. The Commander is a beautiful knife, tho.

So, I have settled on the waved 7B as my choice for a carry knife. My SFS 7B is now carried in my left front pocket as back up to my BTS Commander. I like the left hand reverse ice pick draw as a back up option, and I have you guys to thank for letting me know about it.

The Commander will ride in my right front pocket until my BTS waved 7B with blue liners arrives from EKI.

After that it will be relegated to reserve duty until I get more waved 7B's, then I might then sell it. Who knows.

I'd like to know what you guys think.

I did a few things to my Commander to get 100% reliabilty without the blade getting sloppy.

First, I adjusted the pivot pin to the tension I liked. Leaving the pin in this position, I put a piece of tape across it and onto the scale, then cut the tape between the pin head and the scale. Then I counted the number of turns to completely remove the pin.

Then, second, I removed the blade and put a little bit of gun grease on the bushing and put a little Loctite into the female end of the pivot pin.

Finally, I reassembled the whole shebang, tightening the pivot pin the same number of turns as it took to remove, lined up the tape, and BANG!, smooth, easy, 100% reliabilty.

Been there, done that. No go on these two. Militec-1 just wasn't enough.

The Waved CQC-7 is a very, very slick knife.

The SOCFK is apparently the hardest to Wave open of the knives mentioned.

I have not had my hands on a P-SRAK yet, but I am actively looking though.

The Commander is the Maximum to me...

The SOCFK, I think, would be an incredible knife carried around the neck in a Kydex Sheath that activates the Wave.

And the same goes for a knife...
