I have a small collection of knives with steels including AUS-8, 440B, 440A, VG-10, 1095 Cro-Van, and one (PM2) with CPM S30V.
I can get all of them except the PM2 hair poppin sharp. I use the same technique for all the knives and even change things up between guided and free hand sharpening to see if that would help. No matter what I do the rest of my knives come out perfect and although the PM2 comes out very sharp with the ability to shave hairs it doesn't have that extra zing the rest do.
Any thoughts or ideas on what I could do to help get it there?

I use the Naniwa 5 stone system (220,1000,3000,8000,12000) followed by a balsa strop loaded with .5 micron diamond spray
I also use the Lansky guided system (stone) with the same strop combo

I have had the same problem in the past. I have a Gerber Gator that no matter what I have never been able to get a decent edge on, even with years of trying. I don't know if its a bad heat treat or what, but I have tried everything and can't get this thing to cut air. The only reason I have kept it around is so I can tinker with it every now and then. It is totally unusable.

I can't seem to get gerbers sharp either. We use them a lot at work (the guys order them thinking they are good knives) and bring them to me to sharpen. I can get any of mine super sharp but those just don't seem to take a decent edge.

I put my 110v Manix on a damned WICKED EDGE and still can't get the thing to pop hairs. I don't get it.

Every few months, I lose all confidence in sharpening knives, and it stresses me out a little. Then I get one laserbeam shave-a-gnat's-stubble sharp and I'm back in business.

I think a lot of it is mindset affecting your physical motions. Maybe you do x or y that much less or more because you know you've had trouble with the knife?

If nothing else, you can always send it in and have it fixed by Spyderco and have a fresh edge to work with.

Same here. I think it's a mindset too. I think after a while I get sloppy and then have to re-focus. At this point, they're all as sharp as I'm able so life's good at the moment. :D
