So, I became a knifeguy or into this hobby during last decade. First I would buy some affordable knives, some 15-30$ Kershaws, CRKTs, Cold Steels. Then I moved to higher end stuff, -- Spydercos, Benchmade, Microtech, Emersons, and even once I bought a custom fixed by Laconico. But I can't easily swap my knives from where I live. The postage takes 3-4 weeks, and three years ago I lost my paypal account that I was using for sales. But the main problem is delivery. I need to ask a friend to bring knives with him or mail it through USPS, which can get expensive.
Also, I introduced several of my buddies to folding knives and EDCing knives in general. Probably I gave away around a dozen or more folders as presents to people. It is kinda kinky and they like it, and most of those people are carrying their knives with them. Yes, some of my friends are caucious, they either keep the knife in the car (not a good idea) or never carry it, but most of the people EDC their blades. And of course, some people lost their folders, either because of the police checks, or in a confrontation.
Most of my give away items are relatively affordable models. Usually I try to match the presented knife with the man's personality. If the guy never thought about carrying a knife, I would give something like Cold Steel Tuff Lite or a folder with 3" blade. Only once I gave my newly acquired Microtech Ultratech to my close buddy, he is a lawyer and was really against my hobby and would caution me about risks, but when he saw the OTF, he couldn't resist and begged me to sell it to him.
Because quite a number of people became aware of the hobby and convenience of the modern folding/fixed knives, I could also sell a lot of knives, although I don't view it as a business. Right now I have a Bugout that I bought in late 2018 as a higher end specimen. So, because my resale market is limited (I can't sell expensive stuff here), and my location is far away from the US/European markets, I only buy something that I can sell easily or give away without much financial remorse. On the other hand, this gave me opportunity to handle a lot of affordable knives from CRKT, Cold Steel, Kershaw and others. I just ordered CRKT M16 and M21 models, Boker Kalashnikov 74 auto and some Chinese D2 steel blade folders. I usually try to buy new models each time. I really liked Cold Steel Pro Lite lockback, discotinued, unfortunately, CRKT Hissatsu folder, CRKT Hammond Cruiser and some others. But, anyway, it is a nice topic for a conversation, and there is already a number of funny stories related to all those knives.
Most of the times I try to educate the person about caring after a folder, how to sharpen it and etc. With all that hassle it adds new dimensions and meaning to the hobby. Before it was only me and my collection. But now it is a lore of group of friends and facebook followers. And many people that know me think that I have a whole collection, but in reality I usually rotate 2-3 folders and fixeds. So, this was a story of my hobby so far.
