my experience with Commander

I am not one of the Emerson's fans and do not usually post here, but today I have had very pleasant experience with my Commander and decided to share. This morning I was attending baby shower for one of my friends and since I was late I jumped out of the car and locked my keys in with the engine running. My friend had no tools with him, but we were able to find a coat hanger and I had Commander in my pocket. Using the knife I was able to push the door away from the frame so that my friend could stick the wire in and try to catch lock release from inside. I had to hold the door with the blade for about 10 min. and was expecting either the blade to break or one of the screws come out of the handle and knife to fall apart. None of the above happened. We were able to open the door. I would say that for a folder this is pretty good performance, since it was basically used as a pry bar. Just wanted to share. Thanks.

Commander to the rescue . . . again.

Rosanghal,

I know exactly what you mean bro. Once I got that wave feature I really wondered how I went without it for all those years. I could never go back now. I mean just think about it for a second: A bottle opener on a tactical folder...Pure genius. Ernie is a visionary!

Oh c'mon guys. You really think I don't know how to use the Wave? Why do you think I have bought the knife in the first place? I just have not had the chance to use the knife up untill now for the utilitarian purposes. By the way that Chromium nitride finish holds up really well. If I could only have this knife ground on both sides it would have been perfect. I find it the biggest pain in the gluteus maximus to sharpen recurved chisel grind. Any usefull hints? I am using Spyderco system with triangular ceramic stones.

...Ha, if I didn't know you guys better I'd say you were implying that the Wave wasn't meant as a bottle opener. You almost got me goin'. Man you guys are good!

Thank you John,
It is an excellent link with sharpening tips. However I am a bit confused about the first picture. Is diamond rod used on serrations too? Alex.

I prefer plain edged knives, but I imagine I would go buy one of the serrations sharpners, like the one offered by Lansky or Spyderco.

Heres some tips 'bout gettin into locked cars.If you are someplace where you can get these things,or perhaps store them in your car to help others.

Cut a tear dropped shape of plastic out of a milk jug a few inches long.Put some dish soap on this and slide it in and out between the weather stripping. This will lube it up and let the hanger or other tool slide in much easier and not tear the weather striping.

If the car has the up and down knobs (some still do) a piece of thin plastic like a mini blind works better than a coathanger.Fold the plastic in two tape a piece of duck tape in the "fold" (to grip the knob)put a small hole in thr plastic a couple of inches behind the fold and tie a fishline there.Slide the folded plastic in and towards the knob it will be angelled away from the knob a few inches. Now pull the line and it will come right over to the knob.Hook the knob in the fold pull.

If you don't have the up and down knob, and have to use a coat hanger still lube up the door and tie the fish line to the coathanger, you may have to tape it in place or score the hanger so the line stays put.The fishline really helps you move the hanger around to where you want it to go once inside the car.
