A long time ago I had a Benchmade Vex. The size, feel, blade shape, handle and overall profile were great. The price was good too, but the blade steel was nothing to write home about. For the price point, the whole package, including the blade steel seemed like a great deal though. However, I would gladly spend a lot more money on a current day Vex with M-4, Cru-Wear or another high end steel.View attachment 2275782

This is a really pretty knife... Benchmade doesn't do Spyderco-like holes in the blade anymore though, as far as I've seen?

Is this a Spyderco-like hole, or something different? Honest question.

I sadly don't know, don't own a Benchmade as of yet... I don't like thumbstuds, which is what's keeping me from purchasing one. But that's a really beautiful knife you have there :)

The photo is not mine, because mine has thumbstuds. I only posted the picture to show that Benchmade still offers "holes" on several models.

Definitely a cool design, back when BM had good QC, more reasonable prices. That model is very un-BM by today's standards. Spydey hole, liner lock? Love it. Give me CTS-XHP, good QC, and a tip up clip. Maybe micarta.

I dislike thumbstuds as well

Yes, for that blade shape at least. The drop point and tanto Griptilians have thumb studs. Not sure if this particular model is still in production tho..

The Griptilian 555-S30V Sheepsfoot still appears to be in production.
Although sold out on many sites, I can still find them available.

Nothing BM currently makes really gets my interest but I'm really digging that Vex so of course it would be out of production. Does anyone have any suggestions for something similar? Maybe an Emerson?

they certainly are cool knives. it’s built like a tank. whatever coating they used is just about indestructible, i’ve used it quite a lot at work & doesn’t show any signs of wear

The Vex was one of the first knives I ever had even before I started caring about knives/EDC type stuff. I always found it to be an awesome design and execution. I could be wrong, but I remember it being made overseas and had no idea what steel it was. Granted, I didn't really care back then either. I do remember thinking that the thumbhole opener was wild and very intuitive at the same time. I had no idea what Spyderco was back then either. To see this re-released with upgraded materials would be awesome. I'd jump all over it. Too bad BM won't ever do that.
