This is my Father's Navy issue knife from WW2. About 45 years ago my Brother scrubed the blade with steel wool and buffed it leaving the look of an over buffed knife. What can I do now to remove the scratches or is there someone in this Forum who could make it right? I do have a buffer but I'm afraid of making it worse. He past away last April Fools day so I'm getting a little sedimental.

Is this what it looked like before?

I'm not sure if that is a coating or a patina. If it were mine I'd sand it down until I had the surface that I wanted then force a patina with gun blue, vinegar, lemon juice etc...

Others may have more history on the knife and a more accurate way of restoring it. I agree that it should go back to what it once was though. It sure is a beautiful knife!

Sorry to hear about your loss btw. I got my own dads Navy knife when he passed a few years ago.

If this were my knife, knowing that it was my Dad's from the War...I'd be grateful to just have it with me. I'd just leave it how it is. I can relate with you a bit, my Dad is a WWII USN Veteran, although he is still with us. I wish he'd still have his issue USN Knife, as he was Aircrew, but he turned that back in. Although I do have a lot of other items he has given me from his time in the War. Not sure that I offered any advice, but it is great that you have his knife.

Is your goal a mirror like polish with less texture on the blade?
I would like to get the blade surface smooth then I'd look into what it takes to reblue it. I am hoping a person in this forum would know what to use in order to smooth the blade out. I don't like the look now and I'm sufre my Dad was disappointed with my Brother when he ruined the surface. I'm sure he would like it restored.
