This is my father's old pocketknife.

When I was a small boy, this was a magical knife! It was used when we went fishing, it was used for killing, skinning & cleaning rabbits we caught with snares, it was used to kill chickens, it was used to harvest vegetables and herbs from the garden...

So it was an "EDC" in a time before the concept EDC was invented, in a time where every male carried a pocket knife.

This, my friends, is the root of my knife addiction. This is the knife that started it all!

Recently, I asked my father to get it out again, to take some pics. About 10 years ago it was replaced in my father's pocket with a Laguiole with olive wood handles. But it is still kept, and cherised!

The exact age is hard to determine, but it is at least 50 years old!

Ah, the memories! Sadly nowadays there are generations of boys growing up without ever knowing the joy of the outdoor life, and who think a knife is a weapon instead of a tool... :(

Here's some pics:

I can see why you were enchanted by it! Very nice:thumbup: Thank You for sharing!

Hi Jos!

A great looking knife. I´m sure it will serve you well. Here´s the page of the knife company http://www.herder-solingen.de/ I don´t think, they build such great knives right now. But yours is a real beauty.

Kind regards
Andi

Good looking knife. It's in great shape for all the use it's seen. You can tell your Dad took good care of it.

That's a really great looking knife. I've had a few of the Herders sodbuster type knives and they were first rate cutting tools. That knife is a very good heirloom for your family.

Nice story and knife Jos:thumbup:

And they DO still make them. Don't know about the quality though.
Here's one of mine fresh out of the shop before I forced patina on it.

Very no nonsense pocket knife.

Should carry it more often maybe.:)

Great knife and thanks for the pics.
I really enjoy seeing those knives that get the knife interest going in us.

I expected to see a beat up old knife. Looks well used but well cared for. I can see why you have fond memories of it. It's simple but beautiful.

that is a great looking knife.

I really need to get a pocket knife with ebony. Seems to age fantastically!

Most excellent! I've said it before, and I'll say it again: No company can make a perfect knife .... but a lifetime of memories can make a knife perfect. Thanks a million for sharing this.

Those are great memories. I think most of us have that one knife that started it all for us.

Thanks for sharing!
