The cops dropped by and flicked each knife somehow and claimed they were switchblades. Had every knife seized, except SAKs and Leathermans. :(

JBT's.

Dollars to donuts they did not find a "gravity knife" - $5 or $550. They wouldn't know a gravity knife if they tripped over it.

How's this, "crimefighters"...why don't you lock up people who actually USE knives as weapons in the commission of crimes? Nahh..much easier to harass storeowners.

was that something like "you are one apple overweight"
i love this country, but that was uncalled for.
i am sure that there are better things the minions of law and order can do instead of harrass merchants.

Am I correct in assuming that a lot of the knives that maybe legal in my area of PA, are probably illegal in NYC and these stores had no business selling them?

At the army navy, there are a few Kershaws, Benchmades, Spydies and CRKTs, along with a few of the others. (the usual production stuff) No autos nor gravity knives. At worst, there's a KA BAR or two.

"I think as firearms become more difficult to obtain, we are now starting to see a trend toward the use of knives," Hall said. "It's a trend we plan to reverse."

The police would like to see more people getting shot?

Sounds good. They'll stop bugging us about our knives then.

As a police officer, I can tell you I would much rather be out fighting "real crime". However, I can also tell you these officers were probably given this assignment from someone higher up in the city government command chain. Patrol officers do not regularly "raid" stores. They are usually given the orders and forced to follow them.

In Amarillo, the same thing happened with the Kershaw Onion knives. However, it was the County Attorney's officer that forced the issue and the officers were then forced to follow it.

I know they are assigned to raid, but how are Benchmades, CRKTs and Spydies switchblades? (They even flicked a Benchmade Park Avenue)

The AXIS lock (Benchmade) and the index accelerator (CRKT) could be very badly misjudged as switchblades or gravity knives.

It seems to me that there was another group of lawmen who "were just doing their duty"....lets see, Germany in about 1942. I am not so sure that bad laws make it okay for l.e.o.'s to justify doing bad things to law abiding dealers.

First the guns and then the knives! What's next.
I wonder if all of the men on board the hijacked airplanes had had large folding knives on them, how far the hijackers would have gotten?

I think there are a few people that might be offended by comparing what the LEO's are doing to the Nazi regime. What kind of idiotic comparison is that?

In Amarillo, the County Attorney's office sent letters to every knife retailer from specialty stores to Wal-Mart explaining the city ordinance regarding assisted opening knives. The knife dealers are responsible for what happens after this point because they are informed. There shouldn't be any suprises if they get a visit at the store...

Now, I don't agree with the new law. I think that it is a little crazy you can carry a knife with a 5 1/2 blade, or even a shotgun in your vehicle (in Texas), but you can go to jail for having a Kershaw Chive.

Now comes the part where we have a voice...Get out and vote! I gurantee that our County Attorney has pissed her re-election away by making this ruling. Texans don't like to have their gins and knives taken away.

With great hesistation I guess I will add...

The difference between a switchblade and assisted openers is really just symantics. When the lawmakers made the 'automatic' and/or 'switchblade' laws, they based their verbiage on then current designs and, in the process, left some loopholes. Some knife manufacturers out there (no names mentioned) chose to interpret these literally and introduce new models that fall between the cracks. A simple re-wording of the code(s) is all it would take to eliminate these semantic holes and the knives as well. I believe the general intent of the law is pretty clear. I don't fault the officers involved in these raids and it's just a matter of time before another loophole is closed and yet another choice lost. The real question is are we safer for it? Not a chance...

One of my buddies on the forum here, Kh21106, is an NYPD policeman. As he says, what you dont hear is that when a precinct commander decides to hit a store like that it's usually because they've been observed selling to minors or obvious gang members. In NYC you need to be 18 to buy a knife and who really wants people selling knives to crips and bloods and the others?
The officers themselves dont enjoy doing it, they'd rather be doing real police work.

Then bust them for the actual crime instead of making one up. I personally doubt that's the reason. Furthermore, if you are not prohibited by law, then it doesn't matter if a store sells to you (irregardless of past criminal history or criminal association).

muzzleup does make a valid point. But I doubt that US police in today's age would actively participate in genocide. However. I'm sure that most police didn't hesitate in helping rounding up Japanese civillians in the US in WWII. I doubt that it would have changed much if the State decide to round up Arabs or Muslims in this day and age. Most evidently don't hesitate in the area of knife confiscation. I doubt that most would hesitate in the area of gun confiscation either. I'm sure that some some wouldn't like it and advoid doing it, some would quit and not do it, but it would get done. And I think by the majority.

All I know is I am buying more Kershaws now, before they do something silly like ban them. That is also one reason I bought an AK47. Get em now before they're gone!!

Out.
