Headed out today with two things planned to do, one was to make some berry tea and the other was to make Dave Canterbury's Promontory Peg Baited Deadfall with String Trigger trap.

First job was to pick some berries~

This guy seemed more interested in the berry bush leaves~

Came across lots of Heal-all, I wasn't feeling ill but figured I'd throw some in my tea just in case !

All ready to go~

With my tea on the go I could now turn my attention to the trap~

I used natural cordage and recessed the bait trigger to accept it, Dave Canterbury didn't do this but hey there are no hard and fast rules with this stuff !

Secure the other end of your cordage to another piece of wood that acts as a back stop for your deadfall weight~

Set it up and ya good to go, I should have placed my peg closer to the front but it still worked anyway....the bait would be placed on the cordage, this could be berries or frogs etc depending on what your wanting to catch~

This trap took me maybe 5 minutes to make, set up and then film....try doing that with a figure 4 trap.......and it's so easy to do !!!!!

With my trap tested and my tea drank I headed back off with the girls~

Came across a Tiger Lily, the corms from these make good eating...taste a little like wild rice~

Might as well throw one more knife pic in eh, I polished my M6 up a little more ~

When I got home I realised that the same trigger system could be used to catch birds. I used Floss as cordage, you would just need to thread raisins or even a worm on the cord~

I like the simplicity in this trap! Going to have to try it. Thanks for posting it!

very nice... really simple with a minimal amount of time and effort to construct....

Now that's a trap I can make! Nice one, thanks Pit. Would be a good one for an actual survival situation because it'd be quick and easy to make a bunch of em.

:EDIT: Does the back of the deadfall weight actually sit against the big piece of wood connected to the trigger piece? I assume this is to keep the trigger line taught?

Yes it does buddy and that keeps the tension on the trigger line like you said !

That is cool, but honestly figure 4 traps come pretty easy to me. Perhaps they take more than 5 minutes (but not much)...may be I am lucky?

I would practically guarantee that it would take me longer to make cordage and construct this dandy little trap though.

I have to laugh a little in typing this though...I have made numerous traps I have seen on here, and to this day I have never actually hunted with any of them LOL....it is just about seeing what I can make and, this adds yet one more to the list of stuff to try!

Thanks for sharing (once again) some fantastic photos and videos, always a pleasure.

I like it, I am not a great figure four maker and like cordage based traps the best. So I will definatley try this one, hope it works as well as others you have shown.

I have played around with the Promontory Peg trigger a bit. I found that I had quite a bit of difficulty to set the trap so that it was sensitive for rodents. The addition of the cord would make it better for me.

We have quite a few rats in our bush country. I set a deadfall with a Promontory Peg trigger to see how it worked. I used a paste lure, although peanut butter would have done the trick.

I've caught quite a few rats and mice using a figure four trigger deadfall. Although a figure-4 can be frustratingly fiddly to set some times, I'm fairly used to it now and I prefer this trigger for any small deadfall.

The most frustrating thing I seem to experience when trying to set any simple deadfall is when the weight (rock or whatever) wants to slide or roll around when lifted into position. A nice, square flat rock like a paving slab is good but nature doesn't always provide these. So sometimes it seems necessary to do something like sit a heavy rock behind the weight so it cant slide.

I like the reliability and sensitivity of a well-made figure-4 trigger. I guess I don't have many problems with them because I've whittled and set dozens of triggers. At a building site, I once used a partly-filled wooden nail case (quite heavy) as the deadfall weight, yet it was triggered by a small mouse.

But I do love the simplicity of the Promontory Peg.

Very cool Pit! I'll have to try out your "bird" trap but with turtles instead. I've got a ton out in our lake and it wouldn't take much to entice them to a nice meal. The box really lets you practice. Thanks for the vids and turtorial,

Thanks for the post Pit. I've been playing around with the promontory for a bit now. I like it better than the fig.4..less work and faster to do.

Pit,

I gotta have your job. You get out, demonstrate tremendous skill, take great pics, enjoy the day with the dogs, more than any other guy I know. Another great post, brother.

Yep, it is what people like Pit do that keeps this forum alive and interesting. I love seeing nice outdoorsy pics.

Thanks for the kind words guys !

Mrs Pit always gets home, looks at my threads and says " I see you've been busy again, what about the chores you had to do ?"................:o
