I have an old all brass 4 inch FHM that my uncle gave to my dad when we went to the Phillipines in 1991 I think. I only recently found it deep in my dad's junk about 2 months ago.

I don't know how it used to flip but now its like theres glue in the joints. The joints are tight but I can still flip it with force.

I was just wondering if anyone can help me loosen up this bali.

Maybe it has never been used. Bear in mind that it is a ritual to "break-in" an FMH by gently bending the handles back and forth to losen them to your liking. All the while, a little lubricant does a world of good. Please remember that many lubricants (including the all mighty WD40) act as a dirt magnet!

Good luck with your new treasure!

Oooooo no, it's been used before. Before I found Clay's site I used to flip that thing around all the time. And after I've learned a lot from the site I've been practicing the techniques on it.

I was wrong on the passage of time there though. I think I found it about 3 months ago. It was loose for a while because I cleaned it with silver tarnish(i had nothing else) and it worked and it was loose and fine.

But one day I went to the park and dropped it in the dirt a couple times when I was throwing it at this tree. That day when I got home it was tight like it is now. I tried some sewing machine oil and that only helped a little...

Okay, let me understand this...you were throwing the knife at a tree. Fair to say that you hit it at least once? I'll have to think about this one! Have you noticed any deformations in the alignment that weren't there before?

Nope, and it wobbles very little.

I was trying to get it to wobble just to loosen it up by taking the handles and moving them back and forth against the pins and it was hard. It's like someone hammered the pins tight.

And BTW, can brass blades be sharpened?

Yes, brass can be sharpened but does not hold a very good edge! (at all)

Sounds like you need nothing more than a simple tune - up! Sites are aboundant!

Why do people throw their balisongs at trees?? It totally screws up the pins, blade, alignment, plus it gets strange crap in the joints. The balisong is not designed to be a throwing knife, the fork is not designed for most soups, the table knife is not designed for Jello, the spoon is not disigned for spaghetti, and the balisong is not designed to be thrown.

Well, enough of my nagging. Did you guys hear that in June, Napster is going to start charging money to use the program?

I, too, don't get why anyone would practice throwing their balisong at trees (or at anything for that matter).

As for the Napster topic? Money for their service? Why do they even deserve money for developing a program with steals from the record companies and artists? Besides, it's really up to the users who share their files, whether or not others can even download off of them.

Oh well, it's their decision, but it'll be fun to see how they regulate it.

Ok Ok Ok guys I get the message, don't throw balisongs. And I told you it was a while ago and I learned from the experience.

And just to clear up some of this and prevent any further confusion...

It was not a public park, it wasn't even really a park. It was in the private woods of my freind's backyard.

It was a big tree with a flat enough front and I didn't even start it. I let my freind borrow it and I turned around and saw him throwing it at a tree. I yelled at him for doing it but then decided to try myself.

Well Ill be the voice of dissent. Go ahead and throw your balisong at trees. Its your balisong. However, dont expect it not to receive damage. Ive seen some cool bali throwing tricks, but then again theyre tricks. Kinda like punching a balisong through a quater. You dont need to, its not particularly healthy for the quarter, but hey if you want to and dont mind potential damage go ahead.
