Couple questions for you fine Buck collectors! I am giving my father in law a brand new Buck 110 for Christmas and it is very stiff right out of the box, I want to advise him on how to properly keep it clean and lubricated, however if I make things too specific or too much it is possible it will get neglected.

I was hoping you guys would have a very common suggestion for a lubricant he can use that can be bought at any major store chain like Walmart/Home Depot/etc. that I know he will likely have at the house or I can get him and also do you guys usually pull the blade out and just give it a quick wash with soap and hot water before lubricating?

Thanks!

P.S. If anybody knows any good places to have it sent in and engraved let me know! :)

Some folk like the mineral oil found in the pharmacy section or at Walgreens at-al.

If the blade feels stiff out of the box, wash the pivot and blade well with hot soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) and a toothbrush. Work the blade open and closed a few times with the knife submerged, as well.
Wipe dry, spray a little WD-40 on the pivot, wipe off any excess, then oil the joints.
I just use olive oil or 3 in 1 oil on my knives. I don't notice any aftertaste when I use them for food prep.
I don't know of anyone that engraves blades, other than Buck's Custom Shop, but I think you have to order the knife from them for that service. As far as I know, they will not engrave a knife sent in to them.

IMHO, The 110 makes a great gift. :)

Thank you, thank you, and thank you. Highly appreciate your answering all my questions and making it simple!

What afishunter said, I've lost track of the 110's I've had to clean what appears to be black buffing compound out of the pivot when I first bought them.

Yep just clean it out, that's what I had to do when I got mine in 2013.

And for oil I use mineral oil, you can get a decent sized bottle for $2 and change at any pharmacy or pharmacy section where it's sold for dietary purposes.

I know i'm about to ask some very generic questions that should probably just be common sense but i'm just going to ask:

-Open and close the blade with the knife completely under water correct? Will it not mess anything up inside the handle? If not, can I also clean my benchmade mini grip like this? I've been scared to clean any of my knives because I don't want to dissasemble.

-When you say spray the pivot do you mean with the blade open spray inside to the pivot or with it closed just spray the pivot on the outside of the scales? Will mineral oil and a wipe pad do the same thing as wd-40?

-I'm sorry for this question but...which part of the knife is the joints?

Thank you for all your patience and everyone for your awesome and helpful answers!

Yes, he's saying open and close it w/ the knife under running hot tap water. It shouldn't mess up anything.
Yes, spray the pivot w/ the blade open. In the blade well. The spray needs to be under pressure.
He's using the term pivot and joints as the same. Where the blade pivots on a folder.
Your needing to rinse the polishing compound out from around the blade where the handles meet the side of the blade. DM

What I do I put the mineral oil on both sides of the open blade right where it comes out of the handle and let it run down in while I open and close it holding it upwards.

There and where the tang meets the back spring. I put a couple drops inside the blade well, and outside, and work the blade open and closed to try and get the oil in-between the tang and back spring.

Dish soap and hot water soak. Then rinse with hot water. I use compressed (canned) air to blow the water out. Then mineral oil liberally. Open and close it to work it in. Let it sit for a while. Wipe of the excess oil.

Hey, did you wash your knife just for me? :D
Whats your opinion on using this exact method on a bm mini grip and other non traditonal folders?

I use this same method on my slip joints, Vantages and Mini. I use Breakfree or G-96 and an air compressor instead of canned air. Preston

Break-free works. I've also had success w/ WD-40 Specialist. Just spray it in and work the blade back and forth 30 times. DM

I'm glad this is being discussed. I picked up a Sam's Club Cocbolo set. The 110 was tight, but the real problem is unlocking the blade. Nearly impossible to do without a real struggle. Never had this happen with any 110, 112, 422, 426 or any other Buck. I got on the chat with the factory and it was suggested I try to loosen it by opening and moving the blade back and forth to try to give the blade a little play. Tried that plus I lubed it with oil, WD-40, and a teflon / silicon gun lube. Still really hard to disengage. I guess I'm going to try the soapy hot water wash, canned air and mineral oil treatment. I really don't want to send it back if I can remedy it myself. I'm currently on blood thinners for a recent double knee replacement and don't you know it but I finally cut myself trying to close it. Nothing serious, just a knick but I bled all over the bathroom. (Had to clean up quick and sneaky or the wife would have really made me bleed.) I'll try the above one last time before it goes back to Post Falls.

Thoughts on this, anyone?

Although it's a good idea to oil the knife, I wouldn't recommend WD-40 for it, for two reasons:

First, WD-40 isn't 'food safe' and the knife might be used for food sometimes (an apple, cutting some snacks etc. ).

Second, WD-40 has a reputation for attracting dirt in the long-term, requiring more and more WD-40 (or rigorous cleaning, but since the buck 110 isn't easy to disassemble...)

I personally prefer to use Ballistol. I also have a tiny vial of victorinox oil, but that stuff is quite expensive and isn't much better than the ballistol.

I like Ballistol however it's not sold anywhere near me :/
