I keep an Eleven on the mantel and use it to split out splints and fuzz sticks for each fire.....Over the last several years it gets sharpened when it gets lazy which is once or twice a heating season......It has been pretty lackadaisical lately and I just received a KME knife sharpener to try out......As you all know I believe you should know how to get a shaving edge freehand with a flat rock and that a Norton Fine India is the best deal out there......Having said that and still beleiving that..... This KME system may very well be the answer for a lot of you......This takes the original Granpa Ray system which some think of as a "lansky"but, I always associate with Ray to it's logical extreme......Very high quality, well thought out, cleverly designed and made from decent materials, it does a fine job of getting the final bevels quickly and efficiently...The pix are pretty self explanatory.....Start with dull blade, end up with sharp blade....LOL.....

I love my KME. I have a strop to go with it, and it seems to be a match made in heaven. I just had to get some new compound cause I managed to use ALL of my green and black compound out of it.

I highly recommend getting the diamond stones for those of you NOT the boss.

:-D Ha..even Mr.Becker uses his 11 for starting fires..hehehe :-) Those sh#$heads at the hardware store thought it was funny that I use nothing but a ferro and my Bk11 to start fires in my woodstove all winter... They didn't even know what fatwood is...and they had it in bags for sale.. They even went as far as to call me dumb.. I told em' all to kiss my hairy a@@. Lol..

i'd try this thing

but i think for home use, and a certain magical consistency that i could only get with a belt system (KMG KMG KMG) i'll stick with my Edge Pro system... esp for kitchen knives, moras, and anything really that i don't need true convexed edges - you can certainly change angles a lot and get 2-3 prevision bevels if you like.

for true convexes, belts imho... the Worksharp tool is pretty damn awesome. love the edge it puts on my Machax. much easier than by hand.

Now this is a featherstick.

No offense to Ethan as I'm sure he can make fuzzies blindfolded but to those starting out, this is actually not the best looking fuzz stick. What you're seeing is deep cuts in a softwood and the "feathering" is a result of the wood breaking as it's curling. I've made a lot of those when I first started practicing the skill. They still work though. ;)

Here's a thread on it if you want to see some great ones. I've always found post 73 humbling.
