Try as I may the 15OT has eluded me for many months. I had bid on several on ebay, only to be sniped at the last second, or the bidding exceeded the number I had established as a fair price for that knife...........Until.

Until I successfully won an auction and purchased a 15OT blank along with a 152OT blank from LT. The blank was a Ducks Unlimited, and had been shaped and polished, it really only needed a handle & to be sharpened. I did have a bit of difficulty when sharpening it. Having never held one in my hand I did not know where to start the grind. I started it too far forward and had to correct it. This left a minor mark on the edge that will be gone after one or two more sharpenings. The thing is shaving sharp and then some.......I have a bald spot to prove it, (on my leg....the one on my head was already there).
The handle is presentation grade Bocote.

Thanks LT! The blank made a beautiful knife! :D

I have a similar knife, but with the staglon handle. The fileback is a nice decorative touch seldom seen on a knife this large. This pattern does make a nice platform for exotic wood handles. Finding Sambar or mammoth bookmatched in this size is tough though. What pattern are you working on now?

By the way, I think that is a circa 2001/02 DUC15OTF. A semi-educated guess is "Ducks Unlimited Cutout 15OT Filed". Decoding Schrade nomenclature is uncertain at best.

Dale,
That's a very nice knife.
Does that bocote come from the US?
What's your favorite finishes - oil,lacquer,polyurethane ???

I have a 152OT that I reshaped the tang on the blank to include finger grooves. Some of the challenges it presents are interesting. It should be done in a few days.
Thanks for the info on the name/number if the blank!

I believe Bocote comes from Mexico. It is a fairly hard and has a lot of oil in it, but not as bad as Cocobolo. I used Polyurethane on this handle. It takes almost a 24 hours for the finish to dry between coats because of the amount of oil in the wood. If you use it be sure to steel wool and wipe it with a tack cloth between coats.
Cocobolo has so much oil in it I haven't been successful in using anything but oil on it. Actually if you can find 600 grit sanding belts, Cocobolo will come out with a such a high polish it really doesn't need a finish.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Did Jantz have the 5/16 brass compression rivets? Did they have nckle silver?

Codger

Codger,
Yes they do. I like the look of brass, and usually use them, but they do have 5/16" X 1/2" shank in nickel silver & 3/16" X 3/8" shank stainless.

Their phone number is (503) 1-800-351-8900.

They have been good folks to deal with, IMHO.

I believe I have two of the DU versions like Orvet got, left and I believe 2 raw blanks. I gave away a bunch when I got them I never had to many of the DU versions. To those who have contacted me looking for blanks in swaps or whatever often up till now I have not been sure what was there and being alone makes me a one man factory and I go through life pretty confused anyway so please get back to me I apologize. I believe sheathmaker was interested in some kind of a swap but damn this week was so confusing I cannot remember or find what you wanted . In fact perhapes it wasen't you. Any way please email if I can assist anyone. Now just so no one thinks I am peddling this stuff. I want to clarify if someone needs something and I can help please email. I did not know how to get the message out besides doing it this way. Just let me know what cyber rules I have broken I will take my chastisment like a man. Glad the 15 worked I only started putting that stuff on when the requests started to outnumber the spam for viagra and porn. LT
