Howdy folks,

I missed the frenzy on the M4 release of the AFCK, kinda kicked myself for not trying harder, or being willing to pony up the dough, but sometimes good things come to those who wait. Or are just plain lucky.

Today at a local shop, I picked up a pristine, NIB 806 D2 Pre-Production model for a great price.

I know most folks avoid the First Run models, and some seek out the Prototype models, but do some seek out the Pre-Production models?

It's interesting in that the Axis lock on this one is similar to the 710--it has considerably less travel back and forth during locking/unlocking.

Either way, it's a great knife, great F&F, solid lock-up, centered blade. I'll post some crappy cell phone picks when I get off work.

Maybe if I stopped stumbling onto these knives I could buy a camera instead...at any rate, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Good for you on catching that beauty, I have had AFCK's pass through my hands a couple of times, but I never end up keeping them. They are nice knives. If you like that perhaps you will be interested in the upcoming limited release of the TSEK's, they have sculpted handles and M390 blades, they also have a much higher grind then the afck, so they are a better cutter.

Hey Inca,

Thanks for the heads up on that one too! This is shaping up to be an expensive couple of months...

I've always liked the TSEK a little better than the AFCK, but it's darned hard to choose one over the other.

Better to get both, as long as funds allow.

Looking this one over, I noticed the serrations are much less pronounced than on current versions. Is that a Pre-Production thing, or was that the way all serrations were back then?

Hmmm... I really couldn't answer that properly, but I will say that all the serrations on benchmade knives I have own have all been identical, I never noticed any different. They were all the same kind of grind.

I have one of the 806 D2 Pre-Production knives and like it better than the regular production.

A bit shorter in overall length and the blade stock seems a bit thinner.

This is a very nicely finished BM, and surprisingly large as well. It's deceptive because it's a fairly elegant design.

Ya, it is very large... the only other blade that looks larger is the spyderco military because its handle is even bigger then the afck, and that is huge.... I like the 710 because of its short handle and very long blade.

That is a very nice catch. You could not have found a better specimen at a better price I'm sure. It seems to be that most brick and mortar shops have all kinds of hidden treasures that the owners never realize they have. A guy recently found a carbon fiber CPM-S90V Military at a local shop too for half the price of whatever they go for these days NIB.

Rev,

I thought it was a neat find as well. "First Production" I can take or leave, if it's the only one available, I'll take it, if there's regular production available I'll leave it.

Since this "Pre Production" version differs in some ways from the final, regular production, I think it's a nice one to have for my small collection.

You're right about the brick and mortars--sometimes you find a little treasure trove.

At this same place they had--had, mind you:D--A 610 Rukus, a 615 Rukus, a 630 Skirmish and a 420 Resistor, all plain edge, all NIB, all at what would've been high prices when they were in regular production, but relative bargains with the prices they fetch now.

That haul had me eating hotdogs and salad for a week until the next payday, but it was worth it.:D

I doubt I'll find another place like it anytime soon. Doesn't mean I won't keep looking though...

Heekma

Same here, I've placed my 710 next to Military and the cutting edge of 710 is longer than that of Military. But military is a way, way bigger.
But one thing I like about Military is the full flat ground blade. I'd like to see BM do that more often. Only knives that come close to being full flat ground are dejavoo's.
I'd like to see BM LE's with flat ground blade :D
