My first attempt at modifications!

Well, Daddy got a grinder for Christmas and I've been dying to try my hand at making knives for a while now. I figured I'd start by doing some modifications on knives I already had. So, I had a Dumpster Mutt (Sorry Bravado) that I'd used a whole bunch on my last deployment. I really did take apart a couple of cinder blocks with it and it showed! I am an idiot and didn't take pictures of what it looked like before fixing the edge, it was UGLY, but still usable. I honestly thought the knife would be ruined by me trying to mod it, so I didn't start off with photos.

I started with pictures to show just how easy it is to strip a knife. It was way easier than I imagined. Before stripping, I had already played with convexing the edge and doing a little swedge mod.

Here is the knife about 30 seconds after I applied the stripper. I took off my gloves and turned the camera on, that's how quick this stuff works!

And after cleaning it off with a quick hit from a 120 grit sanding block. I really liked the way it looked here, but my father in law wants me to make him a polished knife so I thought I'd practice...

So here is where I'm at now. I'd call it 60%complete and I have about 3-4 hours into it. Most of that is due to me figuring out just what it is I'm doing! Next time I could do it in about half that amount.

I still have a good bit of buffing to do by hand, and I may try some file work for fun. I put a slight recurve in it and the swedge is a two part grind that was really fun to do. It's hard to see in the photos.

Next up is an apprentice blank that I've had forever! I'll add more to this one when I finish it.

Please feel free to post comments and suggestions, thanks for looking!

Great job! Very nice! Any specs on the grinder? I really have to get one myself!

It's just the Delta 1x42 combo that they sell at Lowes for $99. If I can stick to it I will eventually upgrade to a real knife grinder ($$$$). I got this model as a gift, if I was buying a starter I'd get one from Harbor Freight for less than $50. There is a lot of good info in the makers forum on how to get started, it's all I've read but I do have a couple of books on the way!

I may try to remove the handles and make this a sub-hilt model... I also really dig serrations... I think my biggest challenge is going to be quiting while I'm ahead! I've already learned a ton, and had a lot of fun while I was at it.

Thanks for the comments so far guys, any suggestions? Sub-hilt? Serrations?

WOW! That's very cool, great job! Did I understand you right...this is your first attempt at this kind of thing?

Thanks, and yes- first try! I retire in about ten years, so I'm going to start practicing now in hopes that Jerry will let me come work for him to keep me from going broke buying his knives!

Awesome. That steel is hard to get smoothed out even with the aid of power tools. I spent many sessions trying to get my Crash Axe to look like that. The steel is really tough; I find it easier to get out the INFI dimples for some reason. Great work.

I would never have known this was your first effort if you hadn't said so!! This is a great-looking mod, and definitely a stellar first effort! :D

A girl needs a knife...

That looks good, I especially like the tip you put on it. Keep working at this kinda of thing, you should continue to get better and better.

You're not done, are you?? You've got way too much blade left - it looks nothing like Randucci's work!?

Seriously, nice job. Wouldn't have thought it's your first project!
