Yesterday I decided to take on the challenge of customizing one my knives. I own a bunch of different Spydercos and decided that the Chokwe would be a good candidate because it has only scale that is a very simple shape, and also because it VERY easy to take apart and put together. Yesterday I gave the blade an acid and stonewash which turned out pretty decent. I like that the logo and text on the blade are all still visible as well.

With stock scale.

Today I took out the Dremel and also a newly purchased Dremel drill press set-up which turned out to be absolutely fantastic. I am not sure I would have been able to make the screw holes as accurately as I did without it. It also helped with making the shape as I was able to move the scale with the dremel remaining stationary rather than vice-versa. For material I used black and blue layered G10.

The scale could still use some minor tweaking to sit more flush around the edges, but overall it turned out so much better than I anticipated especially for a first go at it. The colors of the G10 look awesome with the stonewash and the Titanium on the other side.

The whole process from start to finish probably took under 4 hours. I really encourage anyone who is considering making a scale to just go do it, because as long as you take your time and are careful you will figure it out and get it done. I watched a few youtube tutorials and that was all I needed to get me going in the right direction. I think I am going to try one for my Southard next!
