Just wondered what you all thought of my first attempt at putting together a knife kit? It is a Cobra blade I bought from Jantz Supplies with brass pins and lanyard hole and ivory micarta scales.

That's a very nice job. I wish my first handle had fit that well. While you might want to consider a little more rounding on the next one, I think you're well on your way.

My first kit knife handle didn't come out nearly as well. As for the rounding, I'm still not really finished with that part a couple of years later! It started out looking like a brick glued to the tang but over the months I've sanded away a bit at a time until it fits my hand almost perfectly. I still take it out and sand a bit off from time to time trying to get a perfect fit!

Kevin,
looks good!
I just finished (are your first ones ever really "finished"?) my first kit blade last week--a Mike Irie drop point hunter, which I did in ivory micarta (I count myself fortunate since Mike is no longer taking orders). BIG thanks to Rob Simonich and Chiro 75 for giving me advice on attaching scales! The whole thing was definitely a learning process for me. The knife-making bug bit me hard. . . I can see more in the future!

Be careful with that sanding. The next step after "Perfect" is "Oops, expletive deleted". Been there, done that.

Nice job! I am almost done with my double edge boot knife from Jantz with brass pins and black handle. I just have to do the final shaping and rounding out. I can't finish it until I go back home cuz I am at colelge now and they frown upon blades here. Overall, I like the Jantz kits. What's your next kit going to be?

That really depresses me about Mike Irie. Have had my eye on one of his blades for my next kit, looked like a winner. Hard to find kits you are completely happy with. The Jantz Silver Eagles are pretty good blades and can be purchased from Sheffields for about 1/2 price. The 440C blades have a pretty thick edge geometry and as a result are a little tough to sharpen. Cut pretty well though, brother-in-law brought his back last week to be sharpened and reported that was after gutting, skinning and boning 3 bucks last hunting season. Not bad for a $30 knife (including the kingwood scales).

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!
My next knife that I am working on right now is the "Silver Fox" from Jantz which is the little brother to the Silver Eagle I believe. I have requested a couple of catalogues from other knife making supply places today to see what else is out there in the way of knife kits. This is almost as addictive as buying knives!

Yes it is. Good choice as I have done some of these also. Same results. They do have a semi-tapered tang and this coupled with fitting the guard should keep you entertained for awhile! I have a friend that makes a great wet formed leather sheath, if your interested I can E-mail you some pics. Price is right and they work great. Don't know if your a hockey fan but the 67's are playing Sarnia tonite. Go Ottawa!

Yes please, send me some pics and prices of your friend's sheaths.
Why yes, I am a hockey fan of sorts and attend about half of the Sting's home games. Ottawa only comes to town once in the season and they are a good team. It should be a good game. Is there a town in your area that is looking for an OHL franchise?
Keep your stick on the ice!

Kits definitely ARE addictive! I started with Rob Simonich's Cetan Tanto kit, then I did my three from Madpoet. A forumite sent me a tiny little tanto he had made, which I did with mosaic pin and carbon fiber, then I ground the profiles for 8 tantos that our very own Dr. Lathe put the edges and bevels on (pics soon!) and heat treated for me! I'm in kit heaven right now!

I have done two of the 8 so far...one has some absolutely AWESOME koa handles and brass pins, while the other is really tiny and I did it with green linen Micarta, which looked okay polished but not great. So, I did a traditional Japanese handle wrap over it and it is awesome now! I will have tons of pics when I get done with the other six...

Hello,

Ive always had the feeling that there is only one thing that seperates The Average person and a "knifemaker",,,and thats that one "first" Knife you make,,,after that it depends on if that knife remains the only one you will ever make,or the relic of a beggining a thousand knives later.

Welcome to the Fun of Knifemaking, if you truly got the "BUG" ya cant stop at just one!!

And looks to me that your on the right track,,as your first is more than Respectable.

Take Care, and Good Luck
