so i figured i'd try my hand at leather work. i figure i'd start small with a sheath for the pipe hawk. took a couple tries to get a useabl one. the first attempt failed because the axe cut right through the stitching. added a spacer and so far so good. i should add some rivets but i don't have any on hand

let me know what you think. i'm just learning as i go

Hi Plowboy
I left you a message in your post on the hawk forum. I'm in ontario too.

Regards

Looks good. I recently started leatherwork as well. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the craftsman that post here! Can't tell from the pictures but did you include a welt? This will prevent the sharp edge from cutting the stiching. Keep it up!

the first try i didn't. the hawk sliced right through so it was on to version 2.0. so far it's making the cut

Plowboy, a welt is applicable in EVERY sheath for any cutting tool except folding knives and I put one in those sheaths as well to accommodate a better fit of the closed knife.

The rivets, as far as, I am concerned, are not necessary if it is stitched properly. I don't like rivets in any thing I make and rarely use them and then only if they are in a place that does not show.

I'm glad you found new interest. I hope you enjoy it as long as I have.

Good Luck

Paul

Plowboy, you don't need no stinkin rivets!!!! That's just for plastic stuff.

I like your design, very practical.

Get the book " The Art of Hand Sewing Leather" (ebay, $12). You'll learn, among many other things, how to evenly space out the stitches.

Keep it up!

so far the welt and all the ugly stitching is holding up. but then again it hasent left the apartment. i've got a couple new things to test out in the new year. the bush lot back home is a great spot for screwing around in.

pun intended
