My First Bark River - Bravo 1.5

Hello all!

Just got my first Bark River and consequently, my first blade with a convex edge. I must say I'm impressed so far. It came with the traditional brown sheath, and here it is after I "adjusted" it more to my liking. Some black dye fixed it right up. I don't have any equipment to maintain a convex edge so I haven't done much by way of cutting with it yet. However, I've got some stuff from KSF that's due to arrive tomorrow that will change that.

I'm looking forward to learning how to strop and take care of this beauty, as well as putting it to some use.

Rob.

Congratulations. I went with a fox river for my first Bark river. I wanted something that was a bit more compact for hiking and staying sheeple friendly. So far I've been enjoying it. What'd you end up buying from Ksf to sharpen it?

Thanks man! The Fox Fiver looks like a very nice blade.

Well, I ended up getting this:

I also got another strop/hone and a bar of white compound.

Hopefully that will cover it?

Nice catch Rob. Is this the A2 version? I love that steel and BR does a good job on the convex grind.
Congrats!! Let us know how it works out for you.

Well then. Now I know what strop I'm buying. That's an awesome combo. Two compounds and a strop.

Thanks Andy!

Yes, it's the A2 version and it's also my first A2 blade. Glad to see folks generally have good things to say about!

SoCal, I hope it works well! Looks decent on the vid. If all goes to plan, I'll get to try it out soon!

I've got the Bravo II, and it is indeed a beautiful blade. On my Opinels and BR's I kind of strop them on a benchstone by pulling the blade toward me. In other words I don't try to cut a thin slice of stone but go in the reverse direction.

I get the convex by lifting the blade to a more obtuse angle as the blade slides down the stone.

Oh yes, the Bravo II is a real looker. I almost opted for it over the 1.5. In all honesty, I'll probably end up getting one later... resistance is futile :)

Vba, I almost went with the field (rampless) model, but after consideration, I went with the ramp. This way, I can have it removed if I don't like it and at least I'd know the difference through actual use, not speculation. Messing around with the knife here at home it doesn't seem to get in my way, but I'll defer final judgment until after I get it out and put it to work. So far, however, I can say I like it.

So, I pose the question back to you, why the rampless?

Just used the Strop on my knives. Does a great job. The black compound was a but difficult to spread on one of the sides. The green compound went right on. Presto change-o, instantly shaving sharp. Worked on a Caly 3.5, Umnumzaan, fox river, and the ZDP-189 delica.

Strop + compound will make this really easy to maintain. I'm not sure the white compound is ever necessary, however, as the green puts on a pretty fine polish.
