My First Benchmade!

Hello people of the Benchmade sub-forum. I've always been a Kershaw person, and will for the rest of my life, but that doesn't mean other company's like Benchmade don't make good knives. From threads like "I need a new EDC" and "Recommend me a knife", I was able to perceive that the Griptilian was a very loved knife from Benchmade and that a lot of people recommend them. Well, I had the opportunity to handle one at one of those big hunting/fishing/outdoorsy type stores and I fell in love. I fell in love almost immediately. It was sooooo smooth and it felt great in hand. The lock-up was solid and the Axis (is that supposed to be all capitals?) Lock exceeded my expectations. I have also heard that some people dislike the plastic handles, and honestly, I have no problem with them. The grip is nice and I have no problems getting a good grip. One of the other things when handling it at the store that I noticed is that it weighs a lot lighter than I had originally expected. My mom even said it was light (I'm 15, and the store clerk was hesitant to hand me the knife so he handed it to my mom first because he didn't want to be liable for a cut). The blade steel, which is 154CM, and my first knife with 154CM came scary sharp. It shaves hair like no bodies business and still does after cutting up the USPS box it came in. This is my first experience with 154CM, specifically Benchmade's, and so far I'm impressed. It's the sharpest knife that I've ever received directly from the factory. I also found that the thumbstuds are placed perfectly. I'm able to build-up some pressure with my thumb and the blade flies open. Blade centering is perfect too.

One gripe that I do have is the pocketclip. The retention isn't the greatest and the coating is already coming off and I've only had it for a day. It's not like the coating is falling off left and right, but I can see a little speck that's come off towards the tip. Also, I took the screws off to see about bending the clip to make the retention better, and I noticed that a little bit of coating has come off at the base of the clip where the screws would sit on it. I'm not really worried about the coating, because I think knives with wear look cool and they show character. I'm just worried the most about the clip retention. I've never lost a knife, and I'm not going to start now.

Without further ado, some pictures, which are from a phone, so they're crappy.

Nice chill, where'd you get it :p
Have fun with your grip.

your going to love it brother! i love mine!

as for the pocket clip, its going to wear over time but it looks good with wear on it! trust me.

and as far as the pocket clip goes, it holds very well in the pocket i promise! ha.
its just as easy as can be to pull out of the pocket with that clip!

Nice 551...and you're supposed to break the knife in not your tnumb. :D
I'm trying. The thumb is hurting pretty bad right now. I know it'll be worth it in the end.

I like wear on knives. Gives the knife character IMO.

I think the reason I'm a little skeptical with the clip retention is because I've never really had a "looser" clip. Every other knife I've had has had a tight clip. I think it's just a matter of getting used to.

You can tighten the clip easily, T6 driver and a pair of vice grips... You can make 'em as tight as you like, bend slowly.

You can also call Benchmade and ask for a parkerized clip, they should send you one. No idea why they still use painted clips, no Knut likes them, but most non-knuts probably don't care.

I have a serrated Grip but I haven't ever warmed up to it. Don't know why, because I like the design. It may be because it is serrated. Also, my pocket clip is very tight. When I pull the knife out of my pocket it should like this: "bump bump bump". Other than those two complaint, I really like the design of the Grip and I hope you enjoy yours!

Oh boy. Another addiction for you KE! Congrats on the find and here's to many more. Ill see you over on the Kershaw sub as well lol.

If you like the Grip, you're going to end up with more Benchmades. I was about 15 when I got my first Benchmade. I'm glad you like it. The sickness may commence. :)

I've taken' the clip off a couple times and have tried to hand bend it but It's still the same after I put it back on. It's not that big of an issue, but it was something that I noticed.

Yeah, I don't really like serrated knives. I tend to stay away from them and skip over the knives I see that have them.

Thank-You! See you there as well.
My First BENCHMADE was a GRIP....still lovely
I'm loving it so far. My thumb feels a lot better because It's pretty much broken in. I get yelled at for excessive flicking haha.
Here, this is my 551 H20 custom scale...don't feel as plastic, bit more weight. Solid lock
Damn, those are some sexy scales. Blues my favorite color. My juices are flowing.

I've already got my eye on a couple more. I've still got to get my first Spyderco though (yes, I know mentioning another company in another's sub-forum is frowned upon).

hmmm, my first BM was a grip also.
And just because I love showing it off.
