My First BIG Folder

I've been carrying around a Ken Coats custom swayback Wharnie for some time now, but have felt self-concious about carrying one of my Busse's or my larger hunting knives on a daily basis. After some self-debate I decided not to go with a CRK and ended up ordering a Strider SMF CC (concealed carry) in ranger green with tiger striped blade. This should give me a trully big knife and still have it be quite inconspicuous clipped in the pocket of my Levi's.

I have a couple of Strider AR's I rotate around when I get in the "Big Folder" carrying mode. I have no probs carrying either one of these and with the SMF being a little thinner, you should do alright! Can't go wrong with a Strider in my experience.

Got the Strider SMF-CC and was slightly taken aback with it's size at first. Once I'd carried it for awhile, it seemed more normal. It clips into the front pocket of my Levi's and I almost forget it's there. It sure is imposing when opened, but then a 9" long knife with a 4" blade should look big. It fits my (size 10 gloved) hand perfectly.

Can you post a picture of it? Does it have a special lowrider clip to make it a CC Concealed Carry?

Here's a couple of photos of the SMF-CC which I took yesterday. I believe is called a "Concealed Carry" because of the overall thinness of the handle. Smooth G-10 scales on front and just the titanium on the back. The clip appears to be in about the usual spot, and in my pocket the top of the knife is just barely visible.

Good looking knife!

I like big folders, though I don't have very many. My first big folder was a Queen folding hunter, I lost it long ago.

I have carried two different Spyderco Police folders, and liked them, but wanted something more hand filling, so got one of these...

I have a ZT 200 which is a pretty big (and extremely sturdy) folder. As it is also rather heavy, I don't carry it very often. But it's really nice of course.
Here is a recommendation for a very cheap big folder that's surprisingly useful: the Opinel #12. While it retains the fabulous Opinel slicing qualities, it also features a truly sturdy blade, and the lock is very reliable. During my latest holiday I used one daily as a chef knife - and this worked so well that I started wondering why I had paid a serious sum on a set of Global knives which I have at home. The humble Opinel 12 is useful for several other activities as well, of course.
(below are not my own pics but they illustrate the size of the Opinel #12 well)

Not trying to cause trouble or anything, but do you feel the SMF is worth the asking price?

I was quite taken aback when I saw what they cost. You can get a custom folder for that.

Just interested to know what you think.

It was a borderline decision. I considered a large Sebbie 21 w/micarta and the new Umnumzaan, but the wait was several months for either. A recent situation dictated that I couldn't wait that long. I wanted at least a 3.5" blade and considered a Strider SnG-CC, but then decided to go with the 4" SMF.

To get to answering your question. To get a good custom with the size, strength and materials of the SMF-CC would be very costly. It's a tank, but weighs just 6 ounces. If the knife fits your requirements as close as this one did mine, then yes, it's worth it.

Yes, I see your point...

It's odd that more custom makers haven't adopted the framelock, considering how popular they are.

The other problem of course is that titanium has become very expensive of late (along with most metals).

Anyway, its a lot of knife for the dough
