My first BK-9 build, lets talk

Hey dudes. Here's my plans for the BK-9 build. The idea here is to add handy and real life useful features as long as they dont compromise the original knife. So far I have Jimping (just plain love it), A campfire pot lifter (this thing is long enough to really be useful and for the same reason should work great to be a wire breaker as well), A fish zipper (bush fishing/one knife should gut a trout a little more gracefully), and a Choil possibly (I dont like them in general, but this knife always has me wanting one and after drawing it up its starting to really grow on me).

Here is the 3 options I have narrowed it down to. The bottom is the stock knife. Which do you like best? Got any other ideas or feedback?

I would personally opt for one of the bottom 2. I'm not a fan of choils in knives, though it's less of an issue for me with a big knife like The King.

I personally like #4 a lot. Just because I prefer the strongest form. And the thumb ramp isn't a problem for my hands. It's the strongest, safest form for chopping.
But if your not joining any chopping competitions. #3 from the top would be my First choice for a modded 9.( And unless your 9 forever on light duty. A choil with jumping is too much steel gone in one important area. For me personally. )
If you really need a knife for small work. Look at bk11, 14, 24 & the bk remora. the extra weight would never be felt in the same sheath. And dodge the choil.

I understand some folks prefer choils, eh I can take or leave em. The notch up top though could be a weak spot when batonning. Pot lifter notch?

Thanks for the thoughts guys. As far as the choil and potentially the pot lifter on the end. Do you actually see them reducing the strength enough to allow a break in the blade?

Just curious because I had this discussion with my dad. He said; 'that makes it weaker'. I said I know but do you think it is going to break? He said; 'well no.' So my thinking is it only matters unless it is to the point to actually make a difference. Maybe it is, I dont know but you know what I mean?

It takes a lot to ruin the integrity of a BK9, but I think the notch may do it. The choil probably wouldn't do much to it.

And for the record I dont like choils, but every time I pick this thing up to do anything but carve I immediately want to choke up and want a choil. So I am no choil guy, I just think this knife is telling me it might want one.

You could always grind the front knob of the handle off.

I'm not a big fan of choils either, but a smallish one on the nine is handy. I put one on mine a few years ago and would be lost without it now.

While looking at your mods and thinking of Murphnuge's words. If batonning is in you future. Then you might be better served with a heavy guage S hook. Throw it in the sheath or travel pack. And when you need it, slide it through the pommel hole. Could even notch the scales around the pommel hole to make it fit better.

That baby looks just right. They sure look good without any jimping too.

If you think it would help, I could move the pot lifter out to the false edge. I just cant imagine what could happen though. Are you guys thinking I could break the end of this knife off by smacking it with a stick?!

I drew them on autocad. I have about 10 other options I didn't post lol.

instinct say moving out further would be an even worse idea. I have been assuming your fire would be a small controlled fire. But if you had a real roaring fire. Yo might not even be able to get within two feet of it with leather gloves. If you go out on purpose you can carry a pot puller. If you get stranded you won't have a pot to piss in. And a notch won't matter at all. Leave it off of the knife & keep it strong. final answer

Potlifter, hmm, I got a forest full of them, don't need one on my knife...
And I think that fish-zipper might take on a roll as finger-zipper if you are not extremely careful, just saying....
But choil and thumbramp off should not be a problem...
Nice models, I need to learn this auto cad thingy at one point...

Exactly what I was thinking

Thanks for the feedback guys. Just so you know the fish zipper is only like 1/4" wide. I dont think you could get a body part in there easily. And it's right up to the shoulder of the thick micarta scales too.

What do you guys cut your choils with? They all seem perfect so I am assuming a mill?

We usually just use a drumsander, slow and steady, lots of cooling time or waterdunkin'
