my first blade

my first forge used propane gas and I couldn't make it hot enough so
I made a charcoal forge and heated a piece of car spring to non-magnetic. I hammered out something resembling a blade and quenched it in
diatematious (sp) earth.

after it cools I plan to use a belt sander to do the final shaping and then heat treat it in an oven for an hour at 400 degrees.

I know there are several different methods but I wonder if someone will tell me if I'm on the right track or should I be doing something different.

this is my first attempt at making a knife and I'm self-taught from a book.

Thanks in advance for you advice.

It sounds to me like you annealed it, making it soft. Car spring is likely (not always) 5160. It should be heated to non magnetic then quenched in oil, which will harden it. Then it goes into the oven at 400 for an hour, two times.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, and you did some sort of diatematious earth and water blend. A little more details please?
