I went to the S Georgia/N Florida bladesmith's meeting today and they were taking names for the Bowie contest. J Butler loaned me one of his ball bearing steel 15" knives to try it out (amazing blade btw).

-1.5" oiled hemp rope...no problem
-2X4 chop...bad angle and the knife didn't stick in the wood (probably 1" cut in the wood)
-wood block splinter.....5 full length splinters in 15 seconds
-7 layers of cardboard.....3"
-Wood dowel.....didn't chop it clean through

All-in-all it was too much fun! I had never even seen a contest so I don't have any technique or past experience. I realized on the chopping tests I was making contact too far towards the tip...out of the sweet spot area so to speak.

Upcoming agenda:
-make a regulation bowie
-chop everything in sight
:)
