I just got my howling rat today, I was more excited about getting this knife and I have been about any recently. my first impression was that the handle is a little small, but I'm rapidly getting used to it, and the serrations along the top limit grip positions a little bit.
However as I get used to it it is rapidly feeling more natural it has a great feel on the reverse grid position edge forward. Is very well balanced well put together and while ground. became shaving sharp. not the sharpest knife have ever received but not bad.
if anyone else has opinions on their howling rat, with rubberized handles It would be appreciated.
I'm also wondering whether the California prescription against double-edged blades, is somewhat mitigated by the fact that the top is serrated, and the large grind makes it look like a false grind, although it is actually fairly sharp.
The top grind is actually lightly convex, and the serrations which I've always had trouble imagining are kind of scooped out chisel grind like a normal serrations except much more widely spaced and the other side is slightly beveled for added strength.
I am also wondering if anybody knows for sure what steel this knife is made from it is probably SR 101 , being small and from a small custom batch it it could be D2 possibly.
the sheath is very snug almost to stop because the rubber handles grip the sheath very tightly.
I originally thought I might trade off for something else, but it is rapidly growing on me a very pretty knife. Probably a piece I will keep pristine, unless I needed and some emergency, or go on a long camping trip where will come in handy.
Again if anybody knows how many custom shop howling rats were made, or any information about custom shop Swamp rats this would be appreciated.
