My first Busse...HELP???

Ok guys,

I have narrowed it down to either the Battle Mistress-E or the Steel Heart-E (both with satin finish). But I can't decide.

My only clue for you all is I enjoy camping and wilderness survival weekends. The mountain man in me loves the idea of the big honking Battle Mistress, but the practical side of me thinks I'd get more use out of the Steel Heart. I know both are excellent knives, so I am torn.

So, I ask you, oh wise Busse Blade Forumites, to help me decide. I only have enough dough for ONE of them.

Which one should it be? And why?

Thank you all in advance for any feedback you can give me.

For precision cutting, the Steel Heart gives better control. But both are better than you'd expect from such large knives.

For chopping, the Battle Mistress provides a lot more power. However, the Steel Heart still works well, and you can vastly increase the chopping power of the Steel heart by tying it to a club. (Of course, you can do that with a Battle Mistress, too.)

For prying, the Battle Mistress gives you better leverage, but the Steel heart is slightly stronger. (That doesn't matter much, they are both strong enough to take your nastiest abuse.)

For self-defense, the Steel Heart is more nimble, but the Battle Mistress could chop bodyparts clean off.

Tough choice. I got both. you may not realize it, yet, but, once you get one, you'll soon want to get the other.
 
I think the answer's simple: if you're looking for a chopper, get the Battle Mistress. If you're looking for a more multi-purpose knife, get the Steel Heart.

I was faced with the exact same choice you are a while back. I chose the Steel Heart and have had no regrets... Of course, I still WANT a Battle Mistress! The Steel Heart just seems like a great size for a Busse knife. It almost seems like something bigger would be too big... (in other words, they're both big honkin' knives!)

Either one you chose will be a great knife! They are both indestructible!
 
I would get the SH for your first Busse, I believe it would be way more versitile for you.
 
Coyote, welcome. Hope to see your input after you make the tough decision...

I too will have to lean towards the Steel Heart. That was my first choice (a straight handled one), and I too have absolutely no regrets. It provides the "bigknife" functionality for chopping, while still being able to handle most all small knife functions (except carrots...:rolleyes: ).

A great combo would be the SH along with the Badger III, or maybe even the Swamp Rat Howling Rat. The latter would have about the same cash input as the Battle Mistress alone, and still give you one hell of a package.

Keep us up-to-date with your decision.

Welcome to the Forums, glad you stopped by.

Sounds like you're getting some great advice. Just to add my 2 cents, I'd also get the SH-e for your first. With the Steel Heart and a folder or other small fixed blade you can't go wrong. :D:D
