My first Canal Street

I finally got a Friday off and decided to take my boys out for a day in the big city. I wanted to see Derrick at KSF in his new store. The boys agreed I could check it out as long as the next stop was at Toys R Us. I had my heart set on a new Indian River Jack in cpm154. I really like stainless steel because being around the water so much with work and play it's just easier for me. So I was handling a new IRJ when Derrick suggested the Canal Street half moon trapper. I'm blown away with this knife! Impeccable fit and finish and came super sharp right out the box. I came home and put it to work on the cardboard pile and cut some zip ties to hang yellow jacket traps. I can't believe I missed this company all this time, I'm looking at there other models now. The thing I can't get over is how smooth and easy it is to open, not flimsy just smooth I mean trigger job smooth. I just wanted to share with you all because you've all helped keep me honest.
Respectfully, Chance

Congrats! I've had my eyes on those for a while as well as a few other patterns. They have or had some abalone patterns that look really neat and their bone looks really good too. I have been a bit hesitant to pick one up though because of some stories I've hear about how they treat some of their customers and some of their distributors and its been a bit of a turn off. As you have said and some others too, the action is really smooth and that might just sway me.

I really like the Canal Street Knives. The half moon is great for the amount of knife it packs in a thin package with top notch steel.

I am hoping that they will start to release some new patterns especially in the sub 3.5" range.

I'll try and get a picture for you fine folks tomorrow. At this point I'm completely twitterpated with this little sucker, I agree Redbeardo there's some negative press on Canal Street but I'm thinking you owe it to yourself to try one. My wife even commented on how nice it was and how well it cut and she could care less.

I like your description: "trigger job smooth". That's exactly what they're like. I purchased two Half-Moon Trappers last year and my knives match your description. Excellent fit and finish, sharp out of the box, the 14-4 holds a sharp edge extremely well, and cycling the blade is a pleasure. I lightweight but crisp and precise action.

I just got my first Canal street knife last week, an 'Erics jack' which was the contender for the 2014 bladeforum knife. Like you said, the first thing that struck me was how smooth the opening action was! (Also, the 440c will keep it that way).
I mainly go for carbon steel, but it's really refreshing to try some stainless.

I have been lucky with canal street and of the dozen or so knives I have owned all have had superior fit and finish.

I love the half moon but their pinch is my favorite. They really know how to put an edge on their knives too.

Glad you liked it!

They make great knives. I have liked them from the beginning.

The CS HMT is one of my favorite knives. Which one did you get? I got this one from Derrick almost 4 years ago (9/1 will be 4 years) and it's still my favorite of the bunch. Every single CSC knife I had has been razor sharp.

Robbw I will pick up another on my next trip south, the action is "slicker than owl grease". Ryan Summer I am going to have a hard time not getting the Eric's jack either. I appreciate everybody's comments I know this is firewood and finish project time.

I have NEVER owned a Canal Street ever!!! I've always looked but never acted?

I guess like others have mentioned I've heard good and bad. The good is starting to outweigh the hesitation I've had up till now. I see a new brand looming on the horizon;)

Thanks, and yours is beautiful!! It's great that you got pics, you can watch the bone as it ages :)

I've had 4 or 5 Canal Street knives so far & have been pleased with them all. I especially love the coppersmith Barlows they made for Kabar!

That coppersmiths is awesome!! The patina on the copper is fantastic, do you have any pictures open?

I only had one which I'll post first but its not a very good one as the angle looks weird & the blade looks blurry. I just took another picture for you but its almost midnight here so the lighting sucks & the copper patina only looks nice out in the sun or at least that's when all those colors start to pop. If they made this with just a single clip blade it would be my most carried knife I think as the copper changes almost daily when carried which is pretty cool.
