I have a bit of a problem with my X-42 Auto Clip. The thumb studs stick way too far out past the grips. When it is clipped to my jeans pocket, the thumb stud hangs up on the pocket seam. Anyone else have this problem? And is there a solution to this situation?

I am not sure if there is anything you can do about it. Maybe you could buy a belt sheath for it.

Also, you could probably take advantage of it by using the edge of your pocket to flip the knife open. I'm not sure if this will work with the X-42 autoclip, but I know I can do it with some other SOG knives. :)

but with my luck, trying to use my pocket to open the blade could result in some unwanted surgery. And since I already have had the big V, I don't think I need another. :)

Richard, I am very familiar with this problem :D

It only seems to happen on this model, but it is a pain sometimes (literally) .

I have an x-42 and absolutely love it becuase of it's design and BG-42 steel. But it has "Bit" me several times, luckily not too bad, but bad enough to bleed me. :D

There is one solution, smooth down the side that catches with a dremel polisher a little, make it round and smooth on the end. I started to do mine but decided to leave it alone.

Or if you can do without a double stud, someone could easily put you a single stud on, then it will never catch.

Mine catches a lot, I just learned to not pull it out too fast and be careful, that thing is like a razor blade.

It's worth having the double studs to me just in case I need to open with my left hand. This is one of the downsides to double studs and pockets............they just don't go together.

I will check with my knife folks and see what they can do for me on this. Thanks for the idea. Filing just does not seem like an option for me at least. Would have to file/grind too much metal off the stud for it to work.

and a very simple one at that. Remove the screw that holds the two thumb studs. Reverse the stud from the right side to the left and run screw thru hole in blade. The head of the screw is large enough to not need a washer to hold it. Screw the stud in the opposite side from clip. Then I cut the excess screw and filed down the remainder flush with the stud. Voila!! The solution and so simple at that. Wonder why I did not think of it before.

Richard, that is super, I know this sounds hard to believe, but I had a thread all ready to send you instructions on how to do that, than I realized you would have to cut the screw off, so I deleted it.

I did not think you would want to go that far, and I was not completly sure if the screw head would fit in the blade hole. I have done a bunch like that in the past on other knives, but sometimes you have to use a washer.

Obviously, the flat side of stud against knife blade will keep the screw head straight in hole.

So glad you got it, you should be proud of yourself ! :D

Now it will come out of there................ :D

I guess there is still some living cells in the old grey matter. Now, on to planning for what my next SOG purchase will be.
