As the title says, this is my first post, and I am posting pictures of my first completed knife.

I have been fascinated by knives for years, and started trying to make them about 3-4 months ago. I have made 3-4 other knives, but they were all-steel. The posted picture is my first knife to have a guard and wood handles. I finished it late last night as a gift for my father who gave me his old car to sell to help me buy shop supplies.

Merry Christmas, Dad. And Merry Christmas BF guys (and gals!)

Welcome to Blade Forums.
I'm often impressed with "first knives" posted here as I am this one.
You are off to a great start. Post your future knives as you will find folks here who will help in your progression.

I know your father is both pleased and proud!

Welcome to our addiction Austin.
As Kevin said, great looking first knife. You obviously did your research and took your time. That's a great way to start learning this craft and I am looking forward to seeing your progression.
On the next one, I would work on the guard shape and pin placement. Sometimes you need to put it a hair above center so that visually it looks centered.
That's going to be one happy father!

Thank you for the kind tip on pin placement.

When you mention the guard, what specifically were you referring to?

I appreciate your (and everyone's) encouragement. It feels good, and I am thankful for the ability to persue this craft.

Austin, the guard is on the blocky side, for a knife this size anyway. Although I am not a fan of blocky handles even on large knives. Thinning the front part and dropping it a little would look better. It would also help with another visual problem. By looking at the guard in relation to the spine, I am sure it's perfectly square but visually, because of the slight angle in the plunge and the sizable clip, it gives the impression that the guard is angles towards the tip. Dropping (rounding) the front of the guard should help counteract that a little.
Hope this helps. Looking forward to your next one.

Great looking first! Welcome to BF and your new addiction;)
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
