I'm 26 and have always had an interest in knife making. I made my first one (if you want to call it a knife) in high school using galvanized steel and a grinder. For the handle I used an old sledge handle. Not too pretty and very crude looking.

A few months ago I decided to learn everything I could about the art of knife making. This website and your expertise have been invaluable to me for making my first knives.

I had a few old files that I inherited from my grandpa and decided to turn them into something useful, so here is what I came up with. The oak handled one was my first and taught me to put much more detail into the walnut handled one which will be a gift for my brother.

These were made using a file, angle grinder and Porter Cable 2.5 x 14 palm belt grinder (plans are in the mail for the NWGS).

I plan to get some proper steel and start out right as soon as I can get the grinder set up.

Comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Looking good Jason, I bet your brother will appreciate your first as a gift. looking forward to seeing your talents improve. Are you going to get a forge going?

I annealed these files using a campfire and hardened them with a forge I made. I used an old water pan from a smoker on top of an old pot. For air control I put a metal tip into the pot attached to my air compressor. Not really if it is the best way, but the charcoal (which didn't heat too evenly) heated the blade to non magnetic. I quenched it in 5W-30. I know this isn't best but can't find quinchant in my area (suggestions?) I then tempered the blades in the wife's oven... *note to self - always remember to clean the oil off the blade first!

I'm not sure if I did any of this right or not. Does it sound like I was close?
