My First Convex edge...

Well.. I got to looking around last night and found an old yardstick and some old mousepads. I cut the yardstick in 2 and cut the mousepads into strips the width of the yardstick. Using ShoeGoo I pasted the mousepads to the yardsticks and then 150 and 220 grit sandpaper to the mousepads.

In about 1/2 an hour I applied a rather nice convex edge to my AK Villager. Although it isnt "scary sharp", it does have a rather aggressive "Micro-serrated" edge that is a different kinda scary. It slices paper, but not into ribbons like my pocket knife. I like it, and after being stropped those micro serations will be pretty bad.

I believe I heard of this method of sharpening here at the Kuk forum so I thought I would give my thanks to whomevers idea it was.

Thanks again.

Yvsa,
this thing pales in comparison compared to that GRS I got off of you. I still need ALOT of experience. :o :D

Dayum!!!! I hate those "senior moments!!!!" I hit submit before writing anything.:o

Dawi you will get there. Actually you're probably closer than you think.:D

I've been doing a little expermentation lately with the Norton Fine India Stone.
After getting a shaving edge with the Norton I proceed directly to the Jeweler's Rouge Strop.
I've been getting a different kind of scary sharp edge in that it's more aggressive than the highly polished edges like the one on Dawi's GRS that he got from me.
The next step is to strop with the Chromium Oxide, but I have to make a new strop for that grit. I've been meaning to anyway and now with my new found energy levels it may not be too much longer.:D
But yet again it may be awhile as I'm totally enthralled with my new F# Minor Flute in Walnut from Highspirits dot com.:D

Tis an old idea, for sure. There are many camps of sharpening. I got my GRS to shave hair using a 120 grit belt. Just varied the pressure, getting lighter and lighter. Sharpened it up nicely.

IMHO, anything 220 grit and above is "polishing". A good working edge can be put on with 120, 180 or 220 paper. Just depends on how tired you want your elbow to get. ;)

Now, having said that, polishing does make for nicer "push cuts".
