My first CRK is messed up

I got my first CRK today...a sebenza 21. I am so stoked with it as everyone else has been. It really is amazing. But as I played with the knife it didn't take long to realize a flaw in the titanium handle. In the corner of the handle near the lock bar there seems to be excess titanium built up and it looks bad for a $410 knife. I love the knife but I can't stop noticing the handle. Is this normal Quality Control? Should I exchange it? Talk to CRK?

Hi, in order for any of us to see what you may be talking about, you are going to need to use an image hosting website such as photobucket. If you have any doubts about how the knife should be, send it in to CRK expressing your concerns.

Your pics don't work, but definitely talk to CRK. They'll fix whatever's wrong.

I'm surprised they let that slip through! It is NOT supposed to be like that. I would send it in to CRK if it bothers you. It seems like a cosmetic blemish that does not hinder function, heck you may even consider yourself lucky for a unique Sebenza! :p

No, don't send it to CRK. Service could take anywhere from a few day to a few weeks. If it's new just return it to the dealer.

Actually that is perfectly normal and it is found on all Sebenzas, that said it is rather exadurated on your knife is usually much less obvious. It's from the join where they cut the lock bar and on your knife it was just never cleaned up as well as it usually is. I understand the disappointment and if you're not happy do what you need to to be happy. :)

CRK has some of the best QC in the business. However, for being a high end knife producer, they do make quite a lot of them. Issues in a NIB knife are quite rare compared to the number sold. Chris himself admits that sometimes defects will slip through, as he can't personally check every single one. This is a relatively minor issue. I wouldn't even be bothered by it. If the dealer wont exchange it, I would just wait until you have another reason to send it in.

Personally, I would clean it up myself with a small diamond file. But you may feel differently.

Thanks for the info...I think I'll just keep it till I send it in for service down the road. Just wanted to make sure my newborn is healthy! Just a small birthmark I guess. Who cares...I have one!

You could probably work that excess out with the end of a paper clip. I got a Hinderer XM-18 a few years Back and it had a similar problem - I was able to easily remedy it.

Yes, I found this to more or less degree in a lot of the newer Sebenzas. Maybe they changed a step on the production process, who knows. If it bothers you, they will take care of you no problem.

It can be found on Regular Sebenzas as well as they have cut the lock bars the same way for a long time. In my opinion it is unreasonable to expect CRK to take the finishing process so far that they are expected to remove things like that totally. If you look at any other production knife you will see far more obvious and glaring signs of the production process.

You can be well past half way to the cost of a Sebenza for some knives that have had nothing more than a "cleaning up" on a low grit belt with a grinder.

Cool. None of my regs or classics and just one or two of my 21s have it. I kinda like it though if it is finished as a straight line as in your picture and I have seen worse on more expensive knives.

The OP's pictures do look a bit too much on the rough side ...

Just saw a two part video of CRKs build process and rigorous CQ. Check YouTube for BHQ/KHQs page.
