My first CRK. With some questions

Just received my first CRK in the mail last night. Lg Cocobolo Sebenza. Came to me in trade from a member here lightly used ("loved"). Its fantastic, smooth action, super solid lockup, and I really enjoy the wood inlay. It gives the handle some thickness and can insulate the hand from the Ti in colder weather. Its living up to the reputation so far. I originally was looking to get a plain small 21 as my first CRK, but I must say I find the wood inlay very enjoyable and I think I would be somewhat disappointed with a plain sebenza now that I am holding this one. I took some phone pics, but first I have a couple questions to make this more than just a "look at my new toy/knife" thread.

1. The pocket sheath: How do you reliably pull the knife from the pocket sheath without pulling out the sheath with it. It would be most inconvenient to me to have to dig for the sheath, pull the knife out, hold both in my hands, then replace the knife and sheath back in my pocket. Lanyards might help, but I think the sheath would still come out because the knife is imprinted inside the sheath. I do want to protect the inlays and Ti but if the sheath doesn't work for my carry needs I might have to leave it out.

2. Snakewood: Is this still in production and how hard is it to find second hand? Its my all time favorite wood and I would love love to have a small, or large, or both Sebenza in snakewood. I also have a snakewood GEC toothpick slip joint that would make a cute little tag along with a snakewood sebenza. I don't see wood inlay seb's very often (granted I never really looked for them) and I figure it might be a long shot to look for a certain type on a budget, but I can be patient if I have to :(

Been visiting here this week and it seems like a very friendly place.
Thanks in advance for any help or advise.

Frist of all very nice knife. I only have plain janes but so love the looks of the inlays. I have a slip sheath but have never used it and I would guess you would have to take it out each time. It would for sure keep you knife pretty much longer than just riding in the pocket.
I am not sure they do snake wood anymore but would be surprised if the didn't. I do seem them on the forums and ebay at times. Best of luck in finding one and I am sure you will if you keep looking. Sorry I could not be of more help. Welcome

Very nice. I too just received a small Sebenza with wood inlay and plan on using the pouch when in the office. I have a 25 that I carry when not in the office. I might also carry the small sometimes when out of the office and will probably just clip it to my pocket. Since it's not as long it probably won't get messed up with my keys since they rest pretty deep in my pocket. I don't know how rough I'm going to be on the wood inlays but I am curious as to how much the inlays can take. I might get a small with micarta with insingo blade to be more rough with. Who knows. I might just see what the inlays can take.

Congrats on you new knife and welcome to the club.

Snakewood is still being used and lots of them (large, small and Mnandi) are available at the usual retail outlets, via Ebay, and often on the exchange. I have a large, small and Mnandi .... great wood.

Snakewood is hard to find, esp. in the small 21. I just got one after searching for quite awhile and it was the last one that I could find on the internet. I do recall seeing a large Snakewood, but cannot remember where. A couple of options:

  1. Blade HQ has a Snakewood small 21 w/damascus blade. Gorgeous, but not cheap.
  2. You can order directly from CRK. There is a waiting period, but you know you're going to get what you want.

Congrats on your knife and good luck on finding a Snakewood. :)

Sheath: if you need to get to your knife that quickly, don't use the sheath. Cocobolo will hold up, the sheath protects the polished part of the 21, that's how I see it anyway. Clip it to your pocket and when the clip gets dinged up and it will, don't be too concerned. You can send the clip back to CRK and they will re blast it for you free. I use the sheath, front right pocket with a thin wallet on its right to keep it upright and in place.

Thanks guys, for the welcome and the advice.

I will have to be patient for a little while. I will probably start by trying to trade for any small sebenza I can get, and just work my way up to what I really want. If anyone has a user small sebenza they might trade please let me know (see my sig.), although all I have is productions, mid and high end.

As for the sheath, it will probably be left at home if a lanyard doesn't work for retrieval without pulling out the sheath with the knife. Its not practical to me to carry the knife with a clip in a sheath deep in the pocket that is not easy to get at when I need it.

I forgot to mention...I don't know if it will suit your purposes, but CRK makes a belt sheath in brown or black with a snap cover. (Photo from CRK site)
