My first custom knife - a wharncliffe EDC by Alan Davis

I ordered a knife made to my personal specs back in mid-January and got it today. I wanted something sturdy and this should last a lifetime.

It's a 3/16" 1095/15n20 damascus with desert ironwood handles. Cutting edge is 2", hollow ground, and OAL is exactly 5¾".

The pics from Alan don't really do it justice, but they're better than I could take. The sheath looks black in the pics but it's actually a very dark chocolate brown.

Needless to say I am thrilled with this and will happily order from Alan again.:thumbup:

Nice looking little wharnie! Alan's stuff always looks great. I hope to own something of his some day.

Thanks. It was surprisingly affordable given the steel and handle material I specified; I'm sure a thinner non-damascus steel and micarta would have knocked the price down a bit.

I concur! Does the sheath have a belt loop on the other side? Or pocket carry?
It's a pocket carry; designed for rear right pocket. I'm considering having a belt sheath made as well. There should be several leatherwork vendors here at BF.

Alan does amazing work, I lucked into a grail folder of his that I had previously admired and I couldn't be happier with it!

I first saw Alan's work in a thread on BF last year and immediately knew if I ever got a custom I'd want him to do it.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it wouldn't take years as with some knifemakers.

Since Alan's a Texan and I'm a non-native Texan (I wasn't born here, but I got here as soon as I could) I decided to use a native Texas wood as well. I looked at mesquite, boxwood, walnut, and a couple others but finally settled on desert ironwood.

SC, that's a beautiful Wharny---as mentioned Alan's work is fantastic!!! I've had two of his "Misery Whip" small/neck fixed blades, one in a Maple scale (traded away:o) and the other which I still and always will have a Stag "Misery Whip" in additional to those two I was a very lucky and appreciative winner of the Titanium/Damascus folder he gave away:D

Everything I've seen by Alan looks great.

I've been considering one of his misery whip knives for a while. Hmmm, I wonder if he could make me a wharnecliffe one...

That looks like a jazzed up fixed-blade version of a CS Tuff Lite. Very nice, I like it.

Actually, you're not far off the truth. I've never owned a Tuff Lite, but I have handled one and liked the way it felt. Alan Davis made someone a damascus "Tuff Lite" a year or so ago and when I saw a picture of it is when I decided to buy a custom knife. I just wanted something a bit bigger. :)

Alan does amazing work, nice score. Love the mini wharnie style!!
