I loved "The Edge" starring Anthony Hopkins, in a fight for survival in the Alaskan wilderness. Man versus nature, and a huge man-eating bear, and it featured a gorgeous knife made by Brian Lyttle...a folding hunter with Mammoth scales that was used extensively in the film. I wanted a similar knife, and since I live in Spartanburg, SC I contacted Ross Tyser to see about making something special...just in case I crash-land my Jeep in the wilderness of the Upstate mountains and have to hike thru the wilderness to the closest 7-11 in order to survive off of Slushies and Moon Pies.
We decided on a slightly modified version of a blade he has made before, fixed instead of folding. After pricing some Mammoth scales, I decided Giraffe bone would work equally well, added a lanyard loop to the handle, and Ross was off to his magic workshop to make me a knife.
He used 440C stainless steel, hollow-ground with a slight drop-point and an integral guard. The thumb can rest on the top guard for delicate work, and underneath is a slight curve to protect when pulling the blade toward you. Overall length is 9 1/2 inches with a 4 1/2 inch blade. Handles are Giraffe Bone backed with Black Dymondwood. Handle rivets are 416 Stainless and Lanyard tube is Aluminum. Handle has a slight Palm Swell for comfort and fit to the hand.
There is also a sheath, pictured with Ross's original Rubble knife, which mine is based from.
Needless to say, I am THRILLED! I think the knife is a work of art, and am proud to be its' owner. Since it is mine, and for its' intended utility camp/bushcraft/survival...I have named it the CampMaster. All that is left is to add some black paracord to the lanyard and I will be hitting the back trails!
BTW: Ross Tyser is listed on the Custom Knifemaker listing on this site, and is located in the Upstate of South Carolina. If you are considering a custom folder or fixed blade knife, I highly suggest you contact him... my next project will be one of his Damascus blades...which I will gladly post here when the time comes!
Thanks for the great forum!
