I bought a 'baconmaker' from JAB/Ka-Bar but hated the handles and tang protrusion, so i ground the tang and made these scales. Now it feels great in my hand and looks nice too.
It took me about 4 hours and i used a utility knife, cordless drill and palm sander. The cutting and shaping, including the palm swells, were easy compared to the drilling/counter-sinking of the holes.

^Thanks guys. I tried to buy cocobolo but they just had sets of blank scales that were too small. I decided on bocote instead because they had planks of it instead of blank scales. The salesman told me bocote was just as durable as cocobolo. Making these scales was enjoyable. I may have yet another hobby!
BTW, this knife will be used to dispatch wild hogs on a night hunt this weekend. :)

What did you do to the blade? I have the same knife and would like to give it the same "worn" look.

Great work! That is a beautiful wood for sure.

If you ever decide to try carving wood check out the threads in the projects sub forum. It's a lot of fun!
