Looking for my first custom folder, 3 to 3.5". Here's the deal: I'm looking for a custom that's reasonable (used if necessary). Does anyone know of custom makers--maybe new guys on the block--who make truly affordable knives?

For the record, lockbacks are definitely ok.

It all depends on what you can afford Shmack, because what's affordable to me, may be not for you. It also depends on what kind of folder you are looking for... Tactical, working, or Gentlemen. Some knives out there are, the Mt LCC, it is an excellent knife for the money. You have the small Sebe's, and the Crawford knives. There are many makers out there that make many knives, and the investment is your's, so you should make the call on witch one is the best for you.

The best thing for you to do, is go to a local show, or any show for that matter. Look, hold, and feel the knife in your hand, because everyone that answers this post, will give you suggestions, but you are the one that must like it.

Good luck to you!

If you are looking for tactical style knives I cannot offer much advise. On the other hand if it is traditional styles that you are interested in Bill Ruple is a good one to look into and of course Bailey Bradshaw. Examples of Baileys work can be seen on my site.

Shmackey,
I Don't have any suggestions as to what to purchase because I myself have no customs as of yet. I only have many, many, many makers on my list.

I would offer the advice of checking some of the custom purveyors' sites like those listed above. You'll be able to see the work of many makers in a very shory time.
Here is another site to check out: Arizona Custom Knives. They have a very nice site with a very nice selection.

Hey, maybe you could even post this over at the "Custom forum". That should get alot of responses. (Hopefully good ones...he-he)

I don't like to suggest certain makers or knives when someone says My first . . . . who am I to decide what ultimately must be your descision?

I can give you suggestions on general look fors.

1. Look for a knife that talks to you. It should say, hold me, love me, take me home!

2. Look for a knife that feels good in your hand. It should feel nice when you hold it, You should not have to grip it tight, it should feel as though it belongs in your hand.

3. Look for a knife that pleases you. It's not what anyone else thinks you should collect, nor what others will think when you tell them you own it, it is something that makes you feel good to own.

4. Look for the knife that fits your price range. Not all customs cost $1000+, you can actually find some great customs by lesser known makers with the same qualities as the more well known makers, but as a lower cost. Unless you have big money to spend, I'd say start low and work your way up.

The ultimate decider on what you buy is you. We all have oooed and ahhhed over the great high-end art knives, but the knife must fulfill your needs.

Hope this helps.
