I have been around for a while and have still never put my hands on a FBM. I had a FSH and felt it was a little short for my liking. The FBM was the model that got my attention in the first place (I am sure I am not the only one), I had some scratch a little while back but spent it on a nice old SHBM instead.

My fun fund will be refreshed shortly and I am planning on ordering a FBM from the shop but am a little torn about a few details. I sent an inquiry to have a few quesitons answered but I have a couple more for the HOGs.

I should mention that this blade will be a user. Typical use would be camp chores, fire prep, and backyard fun.

Now on to the quesitons.

Penetrator tip - has this been usefull for anyone?

Skull crusher - Has anyone had a butt job on one of these to add some utility?

Cheers

Yes indeed. Glad you found it.

I was running wide open ...

Not sure I would care for a penetrator tip on a camp knife. Perhaps a swedge would be more realistic? Penetrator seems myopic in comparison to the size of the knife. I like the penetrator on a small knife, like my SS4...

Curious to see other's opinions that have them on users of that size...

I remembered a great old Safetyman thread about modding a FBM beater, I found it but the pics were all gone.

The mod is functional but odd looking to me. The SHBM has a nice flatish backend so I can live with another Mistress with a pointy one.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I recall seeing some on some big Hogs and Rats and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Swedges are sexy but I baton a lot so that may be a problem.

I just want to get this one right so I don't have to send her back in to the shop.

The swedge applied to the cgfbms both looks good, and in my experience hasn't negatively affected baton performance... its still wide enough at the spine that it doesnt tear through batons the way you imagine it would...

One thing you might want to consider is hand shaped scales...theyre so deliciously comfy on the fbm handles.

Whatever you end up deciding, congrats! Youre about to get an epic blade that will last many lifetimes...enjoy!

Congrats on your first custom shop order!! I made my first one back in the beginning of feb and was told it could be up 28 weeks, thats a long time but totally worth the wait!! I cant wait till I get an email saying my orders ready:)

Any minute now...... tick tock tick tock :)

I completely agree. As an owner of many FBMs I'd say a swedge is much more realistic for your needs. It will lighten up the blade and thin out the tip. I love all FBMs but must say I'm most fond of the .27 think FBM either sabor or full flat grind. Either way you can't go wrong. I just ordered a ASHBM and can't wait! Good luck on your order and when you get it be sure to post pics!!!

Here's some eye candy for ya!

They look rather shapely & sexy on a CGFBM too... ;)

Jaxx, I'm in full agreement with you...

That cgfbm you posted is one of my favorites ever - its from one of the 2012 shows right? i dont know if its just the photos ive seen, but the tiger hide micarta they used on blades for that show looked extra special that year...that's an awesome mistress bro

Actually, it's one of the Tanker Grey & handshaped Green Linen CGFBM's from the 2010 A G Russell show that Busse attended. Can hardly believe that these are just about 4 years old already! :)

Awesome.
I called the other day to order but no luck...

Thanks for the input everyone, I have a good idea of what I want at this point.

So I emailed the shop about the order and received some bad news….. no FBM blanks :grumpy:

But they offered a NMFBM blank instead so how could I say no!

I decided to go with the following setup:

FBM blank thinned out to .25
Satin finish
Convex
Swedge
Hand shaped black canvas mags
Smooth pins

But the tale does not end there. I am very excited about the prospect of getting the above mentioned hunk of INFI but with the wait times being what they are I knew it was going to be a while. Shortly after the email was sent to the shop I happened to just check the exchange and what was there? A sweet .25 CGFBM in lightly used condition  Needless to say I grabbed it 

So following in the footsteps of the HOGs around here I’m going with both.

It is not exactly the configuration I was looking for and it doesn’t have the CBT but it is a CGFBM for me to beat on. I’ll give her some loving and eventually send her to the shop for some work.

To make it even sweeter Jaxx was kind enough to fold me in to his pass around so I will have two different FBM models to compare

They're faster than you think. I ordered a custom TTKZ a few months back and it's probably shipping out this coming week
