My first custom slipjoint

After over 20 years I just got back into slipjoints for a change from the tacticals, and other knives I have been collectng. I started building my collection about a month ago with Queens, Schatt & Morgans, Marbles,Remington, Boker, and even a Cold Steel slipjoint stockman which is a impressive knife by the way with the Carbon V steel.
Through all this I have been thinking about getting a custom to add to the collection/rotation, and have been looking on the websites, and reading about some on the forums. I decided I wanted a Tony Huffman splitback whittler who is frequently on these knifemakers forsale forums. I really like wharncliffe blades, and whittlers. I was getting ready to order from him directly when a couple of days ago "revmic" posted a tortoise shell splitback whittler for sale here in the customs for sale forums. As of today I am now the proud owner of that knife. He was very quick in getting it to me, and when I received it I saw the pictures did not do it justice. The beauty, and workmanship is awesome.
I cannot post a pic of it but "revmic" posted a pic of it on the for sale forum where he posted, and also Tony Huffman has a pic of it on his website under whittlers being the only one with tortoise shell scales.
Just wanted to share with the people here how pleased I am to be able to get a custom slipjoint so soon after just begining my collection of slipjoints, and say how pleased I am with the workmanship of Tony Huffman's knives.
Just my .02 cents rounded off to a buck:D

It's always nice to hear when someone is really happy with a custom knife purchase! I have a couple of questions Larry and was wondering if you would mind emailing me at berettaman12000.yahoo.com

Thanks!
Larry (also)

Great first choice Larry! Tony makes a fine knife and is an enjoyable person to talk to also.

Glad you're pleased with it Larry. I'm really going to miss that one. You are indeed correct in your admiration of Tony's work. He is a very much under-rated maker IMHO even tho' his work definitely rivals Rugle and the great Tony Bose. :D
Here's a pic of the beauty......

Thanks for showing the pic of the whittler. She is a beauty:)
Be glad when I get my PC back so I can do pictures, scans, print, etc. Can't see loading all that software in this PC, and then have to delete it in a week or so.

Berettaman12000----

I sent you an e-mail with my address so you can send me your question/s. I was a little slow getting back to you as I did not get this post til today as was busy doing other things, and not on the PC.

Like this knife Tony Huffman made so well that I e-mailed him to get prices, etc. on some of his other patterns as want to order another from him.
Great quality of workmanship, and a perfectionist.

Again thanks to "revmic" for selling this knife to me, and his speed, and efficiency of getting it to me. His a true gentleman, and greaat to deal with.

Now back top playing with the knife, and wiping the drool of it :D

Well glad to see you got her safely! Very cool design, one that I'm taking a great liking to! Here is mine, a Case 53055 stag scales with carbon blades, only thing I wish was that the main blade's tang didn't stick up beyond the bolster...:( but I'll live with that!

The other one is a Queen Pearl #38, swell center or sometimes called a Bowtie? also nice but the whittler is a favourite...:)

I tried to locate that particular pattern, and series from a man who collects a lot of the older Case knives but he said he has those before but not in awhile, and remembers it well after I showed him the pic of yours that I printed up, and took to the gun & knife show to let him see. My next choice was either one of the new Case Seahorse Whittlers, or go for a custom, and that is when "revmic" put his up for sale, and that made my decision for me.
Now to send it to you Mr. Graley, and have a nice sheath made up for it :D

That is sure a nice looking trapper. I found out one thing is as nice as his knives look in pictures they don't due justice til you really see, and handle one of Tony's knives. After I received the tortoise whittler I went "WOW" when I opened the zippered pouch it was in.
I had a 30 minute or so conversation with him on the phone this evening, and learned quite a bit of info on how his knives are made, etc. His is really a nice guy to talk to, and answers all your questions with sincereity, and explains fully how they are done. I am so impressed that am looking forward to getting another of his knives in the future.
Thanks for the pic Don.

Larry,
You made a great choice! I purchased a three blade trapper from Tony last year and it is still my favorite knife. After looking at pictures of your whittler I am thinking it would be a good idea to have one of them too.

Bill

I realized as soon as I saw it in person it was a good choice. I have seen pics of th trappers, and they are sweet also, and if you get a whittler to go along with yours you will have a nice pair.
He told me when I talked to him that it being part time he still makes about 20-25 knives a year, and most of those he sells here on the forums, and special orders. He has yet had the time to be able to go to knife shows, and sell but he is looking at doing it sometime in the future if his time allows.
He is for sure someone to watch in the future as he is becoming more well known all the time.

Concur...you really need to see these knives in person and handle them to appreciate how beautiful they are and to experience the wicked "snap" and the solid half-stops!!

There are some very nice production slipjoints out there, and I have a limited few because I have just started collecting them again but til you handle a well made custom you cannot imagine the difference in quality, and workmanship. Yes I know the price is up to 10 times what a production costs but if you really like the finer things in life, and knives you owe it to yourself to own a custom slipjoint. It is hard to explain the feeling when you open, and close the knife in smoothness, and great lockup. I also know it still is just a knife, and does what the others do, and that is cut but knowing you have top quality materials, and workmanship, and how it feels in the hand as well as how it looks is breathtaking. I have a few gents, tactical customs, and the feeling is the same, and what got me into custom knives.
Enough said.

Gary-

Got the e-mail, and don't know why it told you it kicked back. E-mailed you back, and will watch, and see if you get my reply.......
Thanks again for doing such nice work in making yet another fine sheath for me. It will compliment the knife well, and make for great presentation.
She is another beauty of a sheath, and such a great job on the indent emboss with a great color contrast.
Now if you could just see the grin on my face:D
Looking forward to getting the knife, and sheath, and will try, and not drool too much on it :)
Thanks Gary, you da man
