I look here everyday and I see the gorgeous knives made by the makers here. Todd, Tony, Reese, Ken Erikson and Coats, Rick Menefee, Pappy, and all the others. There are just so many great ones out there. So I recently saved 300. I figure, hey, one i go off to college, knife buying is gonna stop completely. I need to get a good custom to go with my Sebenza. So is there a maker who does good ones for roughly 300? Single blade, or multi is good for me, though I think multi blade is more expensive. What do you guys think?

My answer to your question is yes. A good place to find one is on the Knifemakers For Sale forum here at BF. :)

At 300.00 you could not go wrong with Mike Alsdorf, Ken Coats, Rick Menefee, Bret Dowell and others who post here and Tim Britten. All those guys will do an excellent job in building a fine knife for you.

I personally do not own a knife by Bret yet, but sure have liked what I have seen as well as the comments from the regulars here that do have his knives. I do own knives from the other guys and have been very happy with them.

I would get in touch with Bret Dowell. His wait time isn't long and his prices are great. If you saw an Alsdorf you liked I'd grab one of those as well. There are quite a few great makers here but considering the money you have to spend, I'd go after an Alsdorf or something from Bret Dowell.

You could get one of these for $$ you have....you might even have some left over. :)

Ignore the white specs in the pics...the aren't there in real life.

I think a specific nod to Ken Erickson is warranted...

A nod for sure but unless one shows up the exchange or elsewhere the OP isn't getting one. Mike Alsdorf, Bret Dowell and some of the others mentioned in this thread are more accessible at the moment. The man has money to spend now!:D

hey guys thanks for the tips! I have been watching Rick and Mike really closely. Their work has gotten to be great. And Brett's work is getting better by the day. Those are really the three I am interested in. Hopefully one will be able to get me the knife I really want.

Is there a specific pattern you're interested in? That might help you in your decision. I have an order with both Rick and Bret, and I made my choices based on the patterns they offered.

I would like a single blade pattern, or a nice 2 bladed one. Getting up to a 3 blade stockman seems to put the price wayyy higher then i can afford, but go figure, more work goes into it. But A nice clip point or spear point at about 3 3/4 closed or even 4-4 1/4 would be great. Handles bone preferably. but micarta jigged seems nice too. I saw a killer one Rick did, where it looks like a drop point, his NY Special Pattern. That was killer. But a single blade back pocket is what I am looking for overall.

Rick makes a great BP for a good price, and I think it is just under 4in., which made it a bit different from my other BP's that are right on the 4 or 4.5 inch mark. The one thing I would take to Rick about though is what you are looking for on the pull scale. A couple knives I have from him have blades that are very easy to open (about a 4 on the pull scale), but I like a monster snap (like a 7 or 8).

hmmm ill have to talk to him soon. I dont mind a good hard pull. Ive had what I think is a 7 on the pull scale in a case I have and it doesnt bother me. But we will find out I guess. Any pics of what his BP looks like?
