This is my very first delve into damascus.

I took a "HC" RR spike and split it down the middle with chop saw...stopping near the head. I then wedged a 3/16" piece of 1084 in the split and into the forge it went.

I fluxed with borax and struck it when it was yellow. Welded right up! I then put one end in a vise and used a wrench on the other end to twist it several times.

I know that it is a loose pattern....next time I will fold and weld, etc and will use other materials rather than this 1040/1084 mix but I am happy with my first attempt. No cold shuts, etc.

Made a blade 6" long and it cuts great!

I like the grain patterns along the 1084 stripe.....

I am hooked...gotta make more!

Good stuff, I would call that the ultimat BOLD patturn. A couple more twists and you may have had that tiger stripe thing happening.

Thats cool! I like the river run pattern. Does the 1040 have alot of chrome in it? It has a good color contrast. I think that is migrated chrome long the banks of the river.

It is interesting in the closeup pic that you can see the grain change halfway up the "river" along the temper line.

Steel is amazing stuff.

I like your interpretation Bruce!

I like the shape and simplicity of the damascus pattern. After owning one of you knives I can see you are going to have a future in the knifemaking biz!

Good going!

That looks really cool,I had a similar billet wired up ready to weld but you beat me too it.:)
But now the BUG has bit and you wont get anything else done for awhile except for making new Damascus patterns
Way to go,and Keep up the great work,
Bruce

Wow! That looks great, I sure am looking forward to seeing the whole knife. I like Bruce B's name for it, too. Very nice, keep it up, this is what makes life good!

Wow! that is great! I'm glad you stopped there instead of adding more twists to the pattern. I like em bold. Next time you can try a few more twists.nice blade profile too. Can we see a shot of the whole knife?
