Hello all, hope everyone in the BFC is doin alright.I had to take an unfortunate break from visiting the bladeforums for about a year or so and am just coming back. I have to say i missed it more than i thought. When i first got back into my blade addiction about a month ago, i was carrying my hinderer xm-18 3.5 and was pretty happy, the bummer is i live on the border of two cities dc and md who have pretty polarized knife laws, so i could carry it comfortably in maryland but couldnt take it into dc :grumpy:. So i decided to come back onto bladeforums after some saving of course, to look for a nice edc in a 3" range. After some looking i picked up a real nice strider baby huey and was very happy and content as i fulfilled my task. Of course after a week or two of carrying my new strider i got to thinking about the role my hinderer was playing which since i cant take it into dc is basically yard work and hiking. The hinderer preforms these tasks very well , but i kept feeling like if im going to have two folders one for general cutting slicing purposes and one thats a bit bigger and tougher, than i might be able to find something a little more than what i had in the xm-18 (which is no slouch).Mainly i think i was just ready for something NEW, so i took some stuff i wasnt using anymore and through it up on the exchange to fund a nice tough folder purchase. And this is why i love the BFC, the SAME DAY i posted my stuff , i was proposed a trade deal on a DIREWARE SOLO v2. Well needless to say after doing some very precursory research i decided that if we could work it out i d love to handle one of these tanks. The BFC in all its glory led me to this awesome member who really helped a brotha out and two days after trade talks start BOOM this member sends me the DIREWARE the same time i send him my part of the trade based on feedback, what a class act. I received the knife quickly and WOW , at first i was only minorly excited/attracted to this knife. But after holding it in my hands i have to say im impressed , the fit and finish are very top notch and you can feel the craftsmanship on this beast. I am beyond happy with this knife and im pretty sure im going to use it like its supposed to , great ergonomics and weight as well as the overall design. The blade profile scares me a bit with regard to sharpening but thats about it. so what do you guys think? I also have some questions for other direware users or owners out there, have you sharpened one of these and how did you do it:eek:, im also interested in knowing the blade finish on this ( kinda looks like bead blast but not sure)??? also , when i opened the knife and was inspecting it i noticed some darker spots on the blade and back pivot hardly noticible but are there i was hoping to get some opinions and thoughts on them they can be seen in the first pic.(i am totally happy with my trade , not trying to get over on any condition issues, im just curious and also want to keep my baby in the best shape possible) at first i thought it might be early oxidization but the more i look at it im not sure finger oil that is still on the knife , uneven part of blade finish??? im not sure i hoped that posting these pics will give me some insight. Again i am very happy with this knife , i would like maybe some harder steel than s35vn but the blade stock is pretty decent so it may make up for it. many thanks go out to my man keith , thanks again for the great transaction and making my re entry to the knife community so darn awesome. love me some bladeforums:thumbup:

okay sorry for the long winded post , now for PICS.

i have not tried to use anything other than a warm rag with diluted soap on the discolration to no avail maybe flitz polish or something i just didnt wanna mess with it before i posted it or knew exactly what the finish was.

my , it is quiet around here. no solo owners? anybody get one of these and get excited ,disapppointed?? anybody use one??

Sorry for the quiet. I was looking for a to wipe my keyboard splash guard.

By the way, it does look like a beat blast finish. I actually like bead blast and it's kinda refreshing to see them make a comeback after this stonewash craze. Frankly, everybody is doing stonewash now and it's getting ridiculous. I recommend you put a nice patina on it and not mind the darker spots (gives it character).

Do they offer a 6 standoff version versus this 5 standoff version?

not sure, im looking for more info on these, hence the post. im not real familliar with ordering custom knives either. ive only gotten them from the secondary market.not sure if it needs more point of contact tho as its pretty solid.

Oh - my bad. I thought you were taking questions about the knife. A crock stick setup can sharpen the recurve, along with the front secondary edge.

thanks teflon, yeah im 90 % that im putting this in rotation to be used. im a satin finish person myself but this thing can do no wrong in my eyes so ill be ok with the blasted finish.

ahh thank you , i have a sharpmaker now and it didnt seem like it was going to work. im al.so wondering if there is anyone out there who has taken one of these down and put it back together

That's weird. I used my SharpMaker to sharpen my Spyderco Captain to a razor edge. It took a bit of practice before I got a consistent stroke but after that it was simple. Are you using the corners of the stones or the flats? For recurves and hawkbills it's much easier for me at least to use the corners. Good luck! If that doesn't work then I'd suggest picking up some wooden dowels and sand paper to wrap around the dowels and sharpen them with that. You could even carve the ends of the dowels into triangles so they fit into the SharpMaker grooves too if you want.

^^

thanks man, no have not tried it yet. i was waiting to hear if that would work or not. pretty good idea on the dowels.
