Hey guys I am looking for some help choosing a fixed EDC. I've always carried large folders; BM 806, ZT 0350. I've recently have been looking at getting another tough folder, DPx HEST folder, Strider smf or sng, ZT 030x.

I started thinking, if I expect to get fixed blade strength why not just EDC a fixed blade.

I've never carried a fixed blade so I am unsure of the differant carry positions and sheath types. I did however run into a guy with a Strider DB and loved it! Although I am not much for tanto blades.

I am interested in the Swap Rat, fixed HEST, ESEE Izula or maybe a 3. It will be a user, I work more or less in construction so it will see a lot of rope, plastic ties, plastic sheeting, (dare I say) prying...

If it matters I currently EDC a ZT0350, a SAK Huntsman, and a Zebra Light. I plan to replace the SAK with a LM Juice when I can find one.

Anyhow just looking for some suggestions and carry tips for a newbie to EDC fixed.

Any of these would be a fine choice. It really depends on how much you want to pay.

I've carried fixed, and the sheath is actually the more important aspect. Many excellent knives come with just so-so sheaths, making them impractical for EDC.

On the basis of the knives themselves, the Swamp Rat may be your best choice: very sturdy (pry-resistant) blades, and Busse's no-BS warranty.

The DPX has fallen out of favor somewhat, after the fella who started it made some poorly worded statements. I don't know the whole story, or what kind of customer support comes with the knife

Izula and (ESEE?) 3 are both backed by ESEE's excellent warranty, and lots of good reviews on the knives themselves. Blades are slightly thinner than the 'Rat, but people have used them as leverage tools with no ill effects. Of course, if you Bxtch them up by using them that way, I don't think it's covered by warranty...

You can cut an esee in half with a torch and send them the two pieces and you'll get a new knife free of charge. Their designs a re very robust. I own a 3 and an izula. It's more like if you can actually manage to break this we will replace it. Probably your best option value wise and you can't beat rowen heat-treated 1095

I personally would choose the Izula with handles. Everybody seems to love them.

The sheath is significantly important to your choice. You will have to draw your own conclusion about ESEE's sheaths.

Still a very good knife, the little prybar at the end of the handle might be useful for construction work (removing staples etc)
The knife is VERY sturdy, even the tip is very thick.
I have no experience with their customer service, but I've read some good things about them. Warranty is lifetime, but not "no questions asked"
Only thing I don't like is the sheath, you can't really attach it to your belt with the non-removable MOLLE back.
But theres a kydex sheath available on ebay for a few dollars, I'm gonna pick mine up from customs next week
