Ok i got my first Emerson today. I bought it used on ebay for $ 108.15 ( includes Shipping )

My question is one side of the blade is sharp ( side with the logo ) but when u turn it around the blade edge seems to be straight. Is this normal?

The guy i bought it from said he had it sharpend. The thing is.. it dosnet seem all that sharp. Everything else is good on it the opening action is smooth the lock is very secure. Nothing wiggles or makes noise.

Just wondering tho can i get the other side of the blade sharpend so that it has a better edge on it or will this screw it up?

Thanks in advace. ( Hope this is the right place to post this topic )

its a chisel grind and it isnt gonna really feel as sharp as a std "v" grind, they still cut just fine though.

if ya are looking for a blade to shave with EKI probably isnt what ya are looking for.

i have seen several EKIs modded to a std "V" grind and i didnt care for them myself, if ya dont like the grind i would just swap the thing and get a spyderco/etc. also some lend themselves to this mod better than others (ie commanders come out better than a CQC7 tanto, the '7 is plain funky modded to a "V" grind imho)

You can get it very sharp with pretty minimal work. My CQC-7 (which was stolen a few years ago when I was in college) came scary sharp from the factory, but 154 CM doesn't seem to take a really biting edge like S30V or VG-10 (which are finer grained steels). So even though with a thumb check it may seem dull, it should still easily shave or push cut paper after sharpening it. All you have to do to sharpen it is hone the edge bevel until you raise a burr, and make a pass flat to the stone on the back side to cut off the burr. If you don't feel confident sharpening it you can always send it in to Emerson and they will get it sharp for you. If you grind it to a V-grind the cutting ability will suffer some, as adding the second bevel on the back side makes the angle more obtuse.

These guys nailed it.
It's supposed to be that way. It's chisel-ground. The reasons for this are somewhat debatable; cost of manufacturing, ease of resharpening, edge durability, etc. are all possibilities. It will cut just fine, and will actually be sharper than a v-ground edge if sharpened to the same angle. Consider that, if it were v-ground, and ground to the same angle per side, the total angle would be twice that of a chisel grind.

Make sense?

I actually reprofiled my cqc-10 to a smaller angle, to fully take advantage of this theory. Now that blade gets SHARP.

Yes puukkoman u make perfect sense. Thanks for all the info. As for getting rid of it never lol. It fits perfect in my hand and i have no compliants. I was just worried that maybe the guy sharpend it himself and my have messed it up.

Once again thanks for all the info guys. Love coming here and reading about knives. If it wasnt for this place i would still be buying china made garbage.
