My First Emerson - Satin or Black?

I am thinking of buying my first Emerson to add to my collection of Camillus, Spyderco and Benchmade. It will be a CQC-15. I was able to find a local Canadian dealer who offers a very good price (basically US online prices with an exchange factor) which is rare as we always have to pay a premium here in Canada for production knives.

Anyway, I want to get some opinion from you. I know I want plain edge but it is toss up between the satin finish and the black finish. Originally, I was going with satin as I do not like coated blade. However, I learn from other posts that the satin finish is not a beadblast finish on the blade metal but a ceramic coat instead. So basically, it's either a black coating or a satin silver coating... What is your opinion between the two in terms of:

- durability
- aesthetic after use (i.e. does the black shows more wear)
- resale value

etc.

Thanks for your comment.

the resale on SF is better imho.

the coating will scuff with use, and will show more wear vs the SF.

i do like the black finish on some EKI's, a green G10 SOCFK just looks best (imho) with the black finish.

The black coating will wear off. This only adds character to the blade.
The blade finish is personal preference.

Sell later, are you crazy?

Once you have an Emerson, you will realize there is no other folder.

I'm partial to the black finish myself. It's pretty durable and as stated above when it wears it adds character to a knife. Once I mastered the wave opening I couldn't justify needing any other folding knife. Hands down the fastest deployment other than a fixed blade. Optimum solution: get one of each :D

some think it adds character and some think it looks like crap, just depends on your thoughts on the matter lol.

I think everyones first Emerson should be a black blade. You won't know til you get one and use it. If you don't like it, get satin when you buy your next one. And trust me, you will end up buying several. There is nothing like them for bullet-proof, hard use, kick-em around, fall off a roof toughness. You will never question whether an Emerson can take what you want to dish out. I haven't been able to say that about any other folder I've owned.

Go with the Black Finish. Emersons are users and the best way to showcase a used knife is a worn out black finished blade. Chicks dig it

satin. who doesn't like the look of steel. black coating wears very easily. which some like and some are annoyed by. resale value depends on black coating condition and well condition of the satin in general as well, but scuffed sating sells higher than scuffed up black.

in the end it's your knife what do you want? our opinions don't really matter and there isn't huge advantages one way or the other.

The satin is not a coating, it is a stonewash finish of the CPM154.

Older finishes have been coated, but not the production knives lately.

Personally, I like the satin. Can use it a lot and it looks the same. I have a satin serrated 15 myself. Great knife!

I like black coating the best. Shows character.

get both and send one back, or get one and exchange it if you don't like it. if you go the second route get black first 'cause you'll know immediately if you like it or not. $.02.
