Guess what arrived in the mail today!

It's my very first Emerson knife, a CQC-8. This is going to be my new EDC.

I know you've seen this model many times before, but this one is mine and I feel like sharing!

One question... I bought this on eBay, from a seller I've bought other items from in the past. The seller has hundreds of thousands of positive reviews, so I'm confident it's not a shady seller. The knife came in an Emerson box with sticker and warranty card, and the knife itself was wrapped in plastic inside the box. Neither the plastic wrap nor the box itself was sealed. I noticed there appears to be some dirt embedded into the texture of the scales, especially on the one without the pocket clip. Is this normal for an allegedly NIB Emerson? I saw the 2013 on the blade so I know it's not fresh from the factory. I'm just wondering if this is anything to be concerned about, and also, how do I clean those textured scales?

Congrats! The 8 was my first Emerson. As for cleaning, an old toothbrush works

Could have been carried a bit, or even just handled. As mentioned, a soft toothbrush works well on G10.

Congratulations, and welcome to Emerson.

Congrats on a excellent choice for a 1st. It does look handled or was a display model. Should clean up quickly with the already mentioned toothbrush. My prefered and most used type of brush at work for scrubbing bicycle components nice and clean.

Thanks everyone!

Naturally I've been handling it quite a lot, getting a feel for it, opening and closing it. One thing I've noticed is I have a bit of trouble opening it one-handed with the disc. My previous knife had a thumb stud that was about 3/16" closer to the pivot than this Emerson, and I've gotten very used to that. With this Emerson, it feels like I'm stretching my thumb way out. This is not a complaint, just an observation. I have noticed that after holding and manipulating it for awhile, it is starting to feel more natural, and I'm confident I'll get used to it soon enough.

Out of all the Emersons I have, the 8 I have not tried yet. Congrats!

I know we all have our own tastes and preferences, and I think it's great that Emerson has a large selection of high-quality knives that will appeal to different people. For me, the 8 seemed like the most neutral, general-purpose blade shape of all their products, if that makes any sense. And for me, my first was going to be the one I would carry the most, so that's why I wanted the most general-purpose design they had. That being said, Emerson does have other blades I'm highly interested in as well, such as the CQC-7, Combat Karambit, and a few others.

Congrats! The 8 was my first Emerson also.

I use a toothbrush and spray some WD40 directly on the scales. Rub vigorously for 10-20 seconds or so over the entire scale, then blot (not rub, which will inbed fibers into the G10) the WD40 off with a clean rag.

Do that to the other side, and you're done. Works like a charm.

Welcome to the Emerson clan!

Congrats in your CQC-8! As others mentioned looks carried but typically Emerson collectors usually keep the box, sticker, plastic bag, and paperwork. So I would say it is a "like new in box" knife. Great score.

I don't know wether they collect the stickers or put them on their lunch pails (I'd put it on mine haha).

I know others have mentioned it looks used but I have received new ones from the Emerson factory that were quite dirty. Nothing a little oil and water won't fix. If you trust the seller I would guess its new. Great knife by the way.

Anytime you have to perform a movement that you are not accustomed to, it will feel awkward. Just the say it goes, try doing the splits if you don't believe me. ;) As you grow accustomed to it, you will build muscle memory, your dexterity will improve, and it will be much more natural.

Thanks for letting me know that they can indeed come from the factory dirty.

I contacted the seller to ask about this. The seller says that their items are new and from the factory and they (the people who work for the seller) are not allowed to open packages to check accessories or things like that for any of the items they sell. He also speculates that perhaps it was handled at some point between the manufacturer and it getting into their inventory. I don't know what their supply chain is, I don't know if they get items directly from the manufacturers or what. All I know is that this seller has over 554,000 feedbacks, 99.7% positive, which inspires trust.

Ultimately, I am not unhappy. I would have preferred a pristine example, of course, but because I was paying less ($184), I knew up front that it might be old stock, or a returned or refurbished item, or something else to justify it being sold for less.
