My first engraved knife

I've wanted a somewhat dressed up knife for a while, but wasn't ready for Bose level or higher. I found this nicely engraved Case KY Bluegrass trapper on the bay. I had to borrow parts of the listing images since I couldn't get a decent scan of the knife. I'll get camera'd back up someday, then watchout!

Anyway, here it is.

And a bolster detail.

The engraver is B.E. Eichhorn of Bartlett, KS, a bit and spur maker according to the listing. The sellers, Bill & Sue Bowman (bigsue57 on ebay) were great to deal with. I'm pretty happy with the whole deal. They even put in the listing that if the purchaser didn't like the knife more than their money, they'd refund it if sent back in original condition within 5 days. I think I'll just keep the pocket jewelry. :D

I'm not doing endorsements here, just commenting on the overall experience since this was a first step for me.

I guess once I get a slip pouch for it or maybe an appropriate belt pouch I'll carry it now and then. I thought of keeping it uncarried and unsharpened, but figure I'll get a lot more years of true enjoyment from it by carrying it some rather than letting it sit in a box.

P.S. I'd bid on two or three of their engraved Cases in different configurations, but those all went over my self imposed price ceiling. This one finished just under that limit, including the shipping. It doesn't hurt that trappers are one of the patterns I really like.

Wow. very nice.
My wife would be happy to take that off your hands, but only because its blue :p .

Those blades stainless?

cs

BTW, Does anyone ever get enjoyment from a knife by letting it sit in the box?

Yeah, they are stainless. If the blades had been CV that would have just been the carnary filled, cat's meow.

Sorry to disappoint your wife, but mine thinks it's pretty too. She even agrees I should carry it now and then and enjoy it. I sure like that gal. ;)

Btw, it came pretty sharp. I gave it a lick or two on some bare leather just to smooth off the edge and it cuts quite well. One thing I've noticed on several trappers, US or Chi-made is that the spey blade seems to be the sharper of the two. Both blades are sharp, but the spey seems to always be of a finer edge. At least that has been my experience.

As it should be, IMO. The clip is the utility blade, and the spey is the skinner (assuming you use your knife for hunting)/food blade.

Then again, YMMV. To each his own, right?

My thinking too on the spey being the skinner and reason for the finer edge. Most of my knifes, to include SAKs have had the primary blade as the do it all, while secondary blades are fine edged and very sharp. I call them my scalpels.

BTW, the new knife went into my pocket this morning as I headed out for some lab work. No sit in the dark, boxed up knife for this one.

WOW.. Amos, what an absolute beauty she is! The engraving looks flawless. The scales are gorgeous too.. I love that color, I don't think I've ever seen that shade of blue-green before. The shield is also unique. Is that the engravers shield or what? What is the name Case XX calls those color scales if you know?. The whole package is just absolutely stunning!.. I am glad you are going to carry her, she is just too dog~gone sweet'n purdy to be locked up in some old dark drawer!.

.. BTW, Did you happen to see if the seller had any knives engraved with depictions of critters, like deer, foul, fish, etc?. I saw a Case folding hunter with a running deer scene engraved on the bolsters about 15 or 20 years ago at a gun show at what now would have been a bargain price. Wished I could have bought it. Have not seen anything like it ever since.:(

Have you found a leather pocket slip to carry this little gem in yet?. If not, I have a few extras that will fit a trapper, and I would be happy to send you one if you like.. PM me or email at veritas.group@att.net .. You will find if you carry knives with engraved bolsters unprotected in your pocket they will very easily scratch which boogers up the engraving after a short time.
